The past 4 days it has not started on the first attempt. Instead of getting a beep shortly after I have powered it on it goes kind of like *ehhclick*pause*ehclick*pause* and repeat and my monitor goes into power save mode. I've peeked inside, and it is quite dusty, but it appears that fans are spinning. I then unplug my computer and maybe wait a little, and then try again. Today it started on the fourth attempt. I get to some menu where I can enter BIOS etc or press F1 to continue. I press F1, and it starts like normal. It then runs smoothly for the rest of the day. My computer is 5-6 years old and has been used pretty much every day.
Is that enough information for anyone to hazard a guess as to what might be wrong? Would be much appreciated!

Try changing the battery on the motherboard, when that starts going all manner of weird things happen, there'll be a CR2032 or similar (battery the size of a 10p) on there somewhere, just flip it out and replace it.

Is your hard drive spinning? I had this problem a few years back and it turned out to be a dying hard drive. But really it could be many things.
Take the fan apart and blow the dust out of it. I fixed my own PC a few months ago by getting rid of all the dust but it was only when I took the fan apart that the problem stopped. Get rid of as much dust as possible.
Thank you for your replies! I might try a new battery and more thorough dust removal. Hard drive is spinning I think.

could well be the hard drive on the way out, make sure you have anything you need on there backed up.
It's your hard drive on the verge of failure.
If you have anything important on it you want to try and get data off of it immediately.
If your computer won't boot up at all take it out of the computer and get an expert to copy data off of it.

Ok, thank you. It seems a dying hard drive is the favourite. Everything important is backed up.
Try the battery first, if it's not that you've only wasted a quid. If it is you've saved yourself £60 and a day getting your hard-drive replaced/copied.
My PC also seemingly on life support. For the past week or so it doesn't start up first tiem but displays a series of worrying messages such as:
0 Diskette Failure!
Battery Voltage is low!
closed due to a thermal event!
Then instructs me to press F2 to run Set Up programme, which I do, then, after pressing F1 to continue, it starts up. Any ideas?

On the motherboard (or, less technically, the bit thing with all the bits on it) ((or, for Tommy Toes, the magic shiny)).
It sounds to me very much like you have picked up the "Ehhclick" virus!
Ok-I'll have a go-cheers. The fist was tried first btw-it didn't work.

A new battery fixed it!

Also a big thank you to the clever engineers at Acer who probably saved almost £2 by not including any proper warning system for low battery power, making it so it doesn't boot at all then, and on top of that made it quite hard to change batteries!
Started up an even older computer the other day. When I started it it warned me in plain text that the battery power was low, but I could load windows anyway. The clock had reset, but other than that it worked ok. It was also much easier to change batteries on that older computer...
A new battery fixed it!

Most interesting! I'm glad things workd out so well. I've just been 'having a root about' and found the spare button battery that I bought a couple of years back. I'll be fitting that next time I have the computer open.
I sincerely hope that this is NOT the reason why my 22-inch monitor started to fail to 'boot'.

ReaDding naydam's post just reminded me that I was listening to the radio this morning & a woman had tweeted (or whatever they do these days) saying something about Whitney Houston reminder her of her first 12"
it's amazing how infrequently pcs actually go wrong when you think about it. hard drives so reliable, and etc.
