I don't watch either so I can't possibly comment - but I can check with the kitchen.

SPOTY for me. I agree with everything said. 80% of it used to be highlights, it was a fantastic summary of the sporting year that carried real gravitas. I really thought they'd fecked it up as much as possible when they started messing with the highlights, adding music, dodgy camera angles etc, but this year they really went for it with the pointless interviews. People don't pay to see sportsmen talk, they pay to see them perform!

Before I opened the thread AQOS came to mind. Used to be brilliant, now terrible.
|
|
By:
Both shows are an utter embarassment!
|
|
By:
I used to love the witty repartee in SPOTY between Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart, which was always the highlight.

Corden's bit was atotal waste of time. It was too many flashing lights and glossy finishes, not enough content. The BBC isn't the only thing the two programmes have in common - there is also Sue Barker. She epitomises everything I dislike about BBC Sport.
Still both shows are about a hundred times better than Sky would ever achieve. |
|
By:
It's a good thing James Corden wasn't around for Princess Di's funeral, is all i can think,

By:
i'd imagine viewing figs for new SPOTY are way way ahead of old SROTY so big tick in someone's book. New ver still sucks tho
|
|
By:
Surely not?

|
By:
both are now dreadful and regretfully i dont watch either
they ipitomise everyhing about are shallow society now, no substance and all froth and gloss very sad really ![]() |

I stopped watching QOS a few years ago. I had the SPOTY on last night but wasn't really watching it,doing other things at the same time. I suppose the BBC have had to change the format because they don't have much footage to show as Sky have most of it now.
|
|
By:
I wondered that but they did show Sky footage with a courtesy of Sky logo.

Horrible what the bbc have doen to 2 former great sports shows.
AQOS used to be one of the ferw tv progs which was essential viewing, good questions, good panels and though there was always a bit of banter both teams always wanted to win. It's been terrible for years, when they put Ally Mcoist on that really was horrific, reducing the whole show and format to farce.Even the questions and format turned into a bumfest. As for Sports personality...This used to be the "Sports Review of the Year" and the award was presented at the end of the show.Again used to be essential viewing for any sports fans with some serious sporting clips from accross the board that gave you a real feel of the events. What did we get this year...the X factor.Embarrassing and great shame. a joint 1st for me |
|
By:
Missed SPOTY last night (well, actually I knew it was on but preferred to watch the Real Madrid game).
Used to be reasonably good watch, although Red Rum taking on Frank Bruno in a penalty shootout did get a bit boring. QOS has been dire for years. McCoist and Parrott ruined it and the BBC exec mugs let them because they thought they made it more 'relevant' to casual sports fans. And of course, not knowing something (even about your own sport) became hilarious (yawn). |

By:
The bosses at the BBC Sport should ask themselves why someone like me, who is so interested in sport, can no longer watch either of these programmes....and you can add C4 bosses as to why i dont watch the morning line either. same answer
|
|
By:
I agree about QOS,its terrible, however, some people do like it and incredibly thousands
were prepared to £25 to watch live versions. |
|
By:
QOS should learn something from that fact it long-outlived They Think It's All Over, which, when it came out, made QOS look very tired, but looked tired itself near the end of its run. The bottom line is people like a 'proper' quiz.

My vote goes to whichever programme has had Tanni Grey-Thompson on it.

In fairness i very much doubt (presenters aside) that many BBC decision makers are big sports fans, they most likely take their queue from Sky and the replica shirt wearing brigade. So they attempt to do shows in what they perceive is a"current and blokey"format..now what is current and blokey on a Newcastle council estate and what is current and blokey in a Pimlico Coffee bar are perhaps not one and the same.So your left with a hideous mix of Mcoists,Tuffnels and other such simpeltons.
Though it's very sad that they seriosuly seemed to have used xfactor as a base template for SPOTY |

The observation rounds I hate in qos, didn't even bother watching those bits. I thought mccoist was good, don't understand the animosity - people on here just seem to hate everyone - couldn't believe the vitriol been thrown at every nominee on spoty last night. Haye aside I reckon they were all worthy shortlisters. McCoist was quick witted and funny. Barker gets on my nerves. wasn't too keen on Jonhn Parrot, Dettori just didn't know any answers so he got thrashed every week - that aside he was a good lad. Dawson is a bit of a tw@t, but so was Botham. I like Tufnell, thinkhe's a top bloke with a self depracating sense of humour.
I do want a proper quiz - if I want a quiz that is moreabout humour i'll watch qi or hignfy. With qos I want proper questions about sport. So not keen on the observation round or the acting stff out round. I never get the guess te sportsman round either, and tbf the what happened next round was largey a lottery. |

I don't watch either any more. Mildly put out by the w@nkfest that SPoTY has become - it really did used to be more about what happened on the various fields of play and with much more footage. I think the hegemony of Sky Sports with respect to TV rights probably contributes to the fact that there's less actual footage of the action. It's become way too luvvie as well - full of BBC full-on politically correct backslapping.
Question of Sport is just awful now. It's not helped by Matt Dawson who must be one of the most objectionable people that appear regularly on TV. I cannot, off-hand, think of anyone who I'd less like to be stuck in a lift with in person, with the possible exception of Michael Barrymore. In defence of one change though, the What Happened Next? round was always likely to lose its sheen with the advent of the internet and youtube, with most genuinely funny, or surprising, clips being known about by the teams and most viewers. |

It's because they devote about 6 minutes to each of the candidates, so that's an hour gone. plus 10 minutes bs at the start when nothing happens. team of the year, unknown person of the year, lifetime achievement of the year etc, then fkin corden and
that wailing welsh bint - how much time is left to cover sport? Was there ANYTHING about rugby in the entire show? What about cricket - we went to south africa and drew and then one every single series of any description we played since then including the 20twenty world cup and we're currently all square with 2 to play in the ashes. How much coverage? 30 seconds - the rest was on swanny. |

won, not one, ffs

just another victim of the great 'dumbing down' of society

How many awards were there?
young sportsperson helen rollason awar overseas team of the year unheralded person thing coach of the year lifetime achievement spoty. 8 awards ffs, no wonder there is no time to review the sport. |
|
By:
Would of been really nice if they could of had some guys and girls(ethnically balanced of course) doing some sombre wheelchair dancing on the stage as Jenkins was wailing.
|
|
By:
Genuine question: was Rugby mentioned at all in the entire 2 hours?
|
|
By:
This is a no brainer, it has to be QOS as this is inflicted on the GBP on a weekly basis, SPOTY is bu an annual disaster.
|
|
By:
I vote for Reggie Perrin, with that coont Clunes in it imo.

While I'm still thinking about it - how on earth did Monty win Coach of the Year? In what way, shape or form is he any sort of coach. Good captain (although, incidentally, I think the Ryder Cup captaincy is the most overrated role in sport), but he is quite simply not a coach. Funny bit was when he was accepting the award, he thanked the coaches in the team. Might as well give the award to the Chelsea team bus.
And come to think of it, since when is a multi-national, European team, allowed to win team of the year on a UK sports award show? FFS, you might as well award it to the All Blacks, or the Spanish football team. As the poster above said, it would be nice if the top brass at BBC sport realised there was something wrong, when a mad keen sports and sports quiz fan can barely bring himself to watch these two previously unmissable programmes. |
|
By:
Do the SPOTY people actually know that Cricket and Rugby are pretty huge sports over here? and oddly as far as rugby goes one of the few baubles the bbc still has rights to.
I expect at LEAST a game of wheelchair rugger on the stage next year.An appearance by Simon Cowel and the Xfactor winner would probbal;y go down a feckin storm as well with the modern day viewer as well ![]() |

BonVivvy - you would have thought after the public reaction to the 2003 rugby world cup, and the 2005 Ashes, someone at the Beeb would realise that the people of the UK are as mad for these two sports as they are for football.
Still surprised me that the World Cup only got about 30 seconds of coverage, despite England's poor showing. And that snooker, which the BBC devotes a couple of hundred hours of coverage to each year, received a grand total of 10 seconds in which they mentioned that Neil Robertson won the World Title. Bizarrely, plenty of the other stuff that the BBC covers didn't even get a mention. Triathlon? Nothing. Rugby League? Nada. British Cycling? Zilch. But so long as Doris the Dinner Lady wins her award for running the dominoes club in Chipping Sodbury since 1931, then everyone's happy. |

It all started going tats up when Andy Crane left The Broom Cupboard imvho.

Should reboot Python's Communist Quiz.
Could have Corbyn and Abbott on one team and Scargill and Chakrabarti on the other. "The first question is for you, Diane. Can you identify this mystery personality from the world of boxing?" |

This is a great repost. this:

Are there any programmes other than baking and pottery and wild life the Beeb haven't fecked Up in recent times?
Can't think of any. Even the NEWS coverage is absolutely dire, some prat in the studio talking about things, on and on, most times, - meanwhile SKY, AL JAZEERA et al are SHOWING the news. But back to SPOTY and AQOS - I used to watch every minute of both, but like so many others I don't watch a second of either anymore - so bad are they. So it's a dead heat, with the emphasis most definitely on DEAD. Not sure the corpse is worth reviving either. Sad, but true. |

Interesting to read my own opinions from 5 years ago on these two lame ducks, and that they are just as relevant now.
I could have written that yesterday; in fact I think I probably did! |
