Gar(b)age,(c)rap,(c)hip) (s)hop, and anything else like it, is not music.

hope that helps.

Dylan was the first rapper in 1965 - and that was music.

Some brilliant rap music, though I'm generally not a fan.

Garage and House and hip hop and all that I can't stand it, but of course it is music.  Some of these kids are fanatical about it - there must be something in it.

60s the best ever imo.
Report DONEMYLOT June 15, 2010 10:32 AM BST
Wasnt 60s music mainly 'underground' anyway? Same as if you actually look for bands these days rather than the pap fed on the radio/telly, you will find excellent stuff out there.

i am sure there was as much **** produced back in the 60s after they realised the 'fame' that was possible, as there is today.

get to any tiny club and once in a blue moon there will be a gem of a band playing to 3 people and a duck.

Major advantage in the 60s - somebody else hadn't already written all the good tunes. Remarkable that anything breathtaking can be made today given that it's harder and harder to surprise and everyone can afford to do it. Like classical music. When Haydn toured The Creation, people climbed over each other to get seats, there were broken legs everywhere. Today, nobody's written anything of any significance to anyone in classical music for a long time. You can't do Magic Flute or Gimme Shelter twice. Harder today for all concerned, I'd say.

Open your minds and your ears, try listening to a radio station that plays music post 1990 or start messing around on the u-tube and move from something you know and feel safe with to something you don't.

I reckon you might change your mind.

boggle's sort of right.  There was a huge void to be filled - stuff never done before.  Today's bunch have to recycle or think outside the orbit of the junk.  And many of them do.  And I have to say some of today's music is far more "cerebral"/interesting than in the 60s.  Though the 60s got much of the the basic-urge music (apart from what the censors stopped - which became much of later output as dodgy standards disintegrated).  Thank god for (some) new music.

In the 60s the music varied from Soul, Motown, ballads, psychadelia, folk, rock.

What have you got now-(C)Rap, sampling, 3 chord repetative dance music and NO innovation. Every Black Eyed Fleas record sounds the same. And anyone who thinks Dizee Rascal is talented should be put in the middle of the crowd in Joburg and Vavazulued to death.

In my time on this forum I have enjoyed the many musical discussions so thanks for that.

Slicer, with the greatest of respect, whatutalkinabout? As said below, when you were young and going out in the 60s, did you go to all the 'obvious' joints or seek out the 'underground' (whatever that means) stuff? You cannot sit there as a fifty-odd year old and moan that the music you listen to from your armchair on National |Radio is crap. These days there are millions of digital stations out there, some playing some quite bizarre and tragic stuff, but there are gems.

The situtations do not compare - the 'kids' go out to the tiny clubs as much as they ever did, and most who will be posting on this wretched forum in twenty years will think the same as you about their kids music.

Incidentally, I have found myself turning down the car radio these days, therefore turning into my Dad.

You are correct in that times have changed and the kids must find there  own sounds.

I never went to "underground" clubs. I started with Al Martino, The Vicounts (who could forget the classic Who Put The Bomp, Johnny Ray) etc.Although Motown sometimes now sounds a bit dated, if I was to be truthful, I think that was my all time fave style of music. But each to his own. However although the technology and production techniques have improved, its my opinion that the "music" hasn't. Talking over music tracks is not talent in my opinion.

I have to say that the best of today's music is certainly comparable with the better earlier stuff. The trouble is all the people i pay to see and listen to the music of these days are NEVER on TV or radio!
Report sparkmaster. June 16, 2010 1:04 PM BST
The biggest downside of music today is that appearance is far, far more important now, in terms of getting a recording contract, which is a bit ridiculous for an aural art form.

More positively, such a contract is no longer necessary for someone to get their music heard by lots of people. Publishing, and recording being so much cheaper means there are vastly more artists out there. Take any chart from the 60s and as well as one or two immortal classics (which of cours are the ones we remember), there is also a tremendous amount of cheesey nonsense and novelty records.
Report bodil June 16, 2010 1:06 PM BST

i listen to a lot of 60s and listen to a fair bit from this last decade and would prefer 60s music  if pushed into a corner , it's interesting that most of the bands i see live who do covers tend to raid the 60s and 70s cookies jar as well as a lot of stuff from recently .

most 60s i see played tends to be from the Stones and the Who

60s music was on a different level to anything before or since.

I'd rate them 60s, then 70s, then 80s, then 50s,

but 90s, noughties, and 10 are hard to split - they all sound equally sh1te. Overproduced, bland, corporate sh1te.
We live in the era of the cover version and sample/mix/mashup - that says it all.
