Both Blair and Brown used the same trick.
Do everything possible to make homeowners feel wealthy so that they spend like there's no tomorrow. If you let the banks lend any amount, to anybody, you can manage for a good few years. Then, to keep the party going, slash interest rates and dump stamp duty. Once that's run it's course, print £200bn and watch it produces a massive 'growth' of .5%, proving that the recession is over and that the party can being. The economics of one of their illiterate schoolchildren, the same schoolchildren who'll be paying for it. |
