Down. Disposable income will reduce due to borrowing becoming more expensive and fiscal tightening.

when's the next election ?
Report garlicbread • January 21, 2010 5:22 PM GMT
I think down too.
Report Jim Hensen • January 21, 2010 5:58 PM GMT
small falls til spring as per seasonal effect. during spring a season that usually sees interest and activity will be eratic with all eyes on the election. Post Summer the fun will really begin as the medicine is administered. Expect a slump through autumn and winter with a levelling off by this time next year/spring.

All imho & if we hit a proper currency crisis then it is all just screenwash anyway.

If Brown wins again (unlikely I know) then they will soar in nominal terms but fall in real.

Down
Report i_agree_with_nick • July 13, 2017 10:46 AM BST
With inflation at 2.9%, a real fall, if not an absolute decline seems likely.

There do seem to be a few factors which would put downward pressure on prices:

Possiblity of an imminent rise in interest rates (last MPC meeting only voted 5-3 in favour of keeping rates on hold)

More stringent affordability tests placed on borrowers

Stagnant wages vs increasing inflation

More onerous tax rules for buy-to-let landlords

New Stamp Duty rules

Couldn't care less.

House prices go up and they're unaffordable.
House prices fall and you can't get a mortgage.

If they keep falling, house building stops, mortgages are withdraw altogether and the private landlords with their cash move in and snap up all the bargains to rent out.

With rising prices at least people have the chance to get on the housing ladder.
Report unitedbiscuits • July 13, 2017 12:19 PM BST
House prices are related to Housing Benefit; the level of HB tells a potential buyer how much income he can expect at the worst. The market is broken because the tenant doesn't care how much HB passes up to the landlord but, without root and branch reform of Housing Benefit, there can be no significant down pressure on prices. It's too easy for the landlord.

Having said that, house owners have had their assets devalued as a consequence of the Brexit vote. Although many houses are worth slightly more in £ than a year ago, in the wide world they are worth less now. But we're all worse off from that perspective.

Down. the rapture will take away all the Christians - so a lot of empty
houses.
Report saddo • July 13, 2017 2:04 PM BST
A bit tenuous saying we are all worse off because our houses are more expensive to foreigners, UB. When did UK house price charts ever adjust for exchange rates?
A good side effect if it puts them off tho.
Report i_agree_with_nick • July 13, 2017 3:01 PM BST
If the pound is weaker, then UK properties will be cheaper for foreigners won't they?
Report Jack Hacksaw • July 13, 2017 3:07 PM BST
Brexit.....Pound weak.  Cheaper for foreigners to buy.  Greater demand.  Higher prices.  House worth more.
