meanwhile once in Australia ..
if 2 convicts agreed to marry (one Male + one Female I might add---none of that shannigans in THOSE days ) and settle there ....
then they could have a year knocked of their harsh sentences and have a piece of land to settle there ....sentences were mostly Hard Labour ...so a year off was a GOOD offer ..
and a piece of land to build you own home on ...an even better offer ...

Life in Australia is sweet for many, but you've got to keep an eye on your oranges.

The Governor based in Sydney had the right idea ..

One of the FIRST tasks the convicts had to perform was the following :-

They had to chisel out square granite blocks from a hillside ,that made a cutting to the Top of the Hill behind Sydney ..
These blocks were used to build
A)..The Prisonn
B)...The Governors House + Soldiers Barracks/Fort
C)..A Pub with a Mini-Brwery attached .

The convicts put their own identity mark on each block they made ,
The Governor inspected each block for flawlessness and a prisoner got 1 Day knocked off his sentence for each excellent block he produced ..
The pub + mini-brewery are still there with the flawless square cut blocks ...on the top of the hill through the cutting behid "The Rocks " in Sydney..
Don't miss a visit to the Pub if you visit Sydney ...an easyy 10 minute walk (albeit uphill)...
You learn something new on here every day :D :D

Strange how hard it is for societies to find some kind of happy medium -they seem to veer between the ridiculously extreme and the ridiculously lenient .
Granted -it is a philosophical challenge to identify what , in practice , this happy medium might be .

Oh and the mini brewery ?
When they first got to Oz the Goovernor + Soldiers received Beer from England in Barrels , that took 6 weeks plus to arrive , and often " went off"..so they decided to import the ingredients and brew their own FRESH beer .. ;-)

If you ever get hold of a copy of In The Penal Colony by Franz Kafka, soak it in petrol, light it and stand well back.

I was forced to endure this pile of sh!t for an exam, bad enough reading it but then had to dissect it and try to make sense of it.Aaargh.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newport_Rising

this was a chartist riot (1839) where 22 were killed from over a thousand who congregated on the Westgate Hotel where fellow chartists were being held.

Of particular interest to me is the Welsh Oak ( my local where I grew up) where the rioters spent the last night before marching on Newport.
Also one of the leaders, Zephaniah Williams, who had his death sentence [ hang, drawn and quartered ] commuted to transportation for life ............ became a mine owner and advertised for miners in South Wales ........ while researching my family tree I found an Australian lady advertising for info whose ancestor had gone out originally to work for Zephaniah Williams.

Her ancestor and my great great grandfather had common grandparents [ perhaps I should rephrase that :) ]

A few years ago I was looking through some old court cases in England in the 17thC,one case stood out to me,a young girl who was 14 years of age vanished from a local wood she was never seen again, the records show a man who was walking through the wood at the time, said he had seen the girl turn into a hare and run off. That was believed, and the man was free to go,I dont think the same outcome would happen today.
