Hsn't been a good film since Shawshank.
Report Sir Denis Eton-Hogg • January 11, 2010 1:35 PM GMT
why do so many films have people getting killed in them?? is that what people want to see? wierdos
Report MRGRUMPY1 • January 11, 2010 1:35 PM GMT
Not since they forgot stories needed a beginning, middle and end.

tough guys a good film, old but a classic
Report Huckerson • January 11, 2010 1:37 PM GMT
Sir Denis, I had no idea what was going on in that film. Most puzzled when the credits started rolling.
Report Sir Denis Eton-Hogg • January 11, 2010 1:37 PM GMT
thats true mrgrumpy. its very easy to come up with a beginning, slightly harder a middle, and very difficult an end

so far the replies have made no case to the contrary. If you are confused by the plot of no country then you would most likely be confused by the plot of Cinderella too.

Let's have your top 10 films of all time then...

You're right mate, most films are shiit.

Well siad Sir Denis. No Country for Old Men was one of the dullest films I have ever had the misfortune to stay awake through. Absolutley no substance. Joined Lovefilm a few months ago and have to say that the only good recent film I have watched has been In Brugge. That has violence, but a bit of a plot a nice bird and some humuor.
Report Jonnnytruant. • January 11, 2010 1:44 PM GMT
Oh dear Budvar... In Bruge. A film about hitmen trying to bump each other off.

I am afraid Sir Eton has you firmly in the 'Weirdo' column.

Report Barry Conway • January 11, 2010 1:57 PM GMT
Schindlers list in Black and White? What's the point? Made it look like something from the History Channel. Would have been much more shocking in colour.

And American Beauty. What was wrong with that guy? Anyone would have been there like a rat up a drainpipe. That woofter Spacey probably changed the script!

schindlers list would not have had the same impact if it was in color, it's an amazing piece of cinema, with some of the finest acting you're likely to see, have to say the only one on your list i would agree with is gladiator, everything else i think you have completely wrong. imo of course
Report Barry Conway • January 11, 2010 2:03 PM GMT
Of course you are welcome to your opinion. I also deliberately try to play down my critiques of these films. Hollywood is full of idiots who walk round with their heads up their anuses. Why else would Scorcese be ignored for so long? Why devote more attention to them than they deserve?
Report madsimon • January 11, 2010 2:03 PM GMT
i think a good test to the films above is wheter you can watch them again in their entirity . I certainly couldn't watch 'No country for old men' or Braveheart again.
Report Reyes • January 11, 2010 2:04 PM GMT
as ever with these things there are some great films about, just that the hollywood style stuff is so lame, predictable and safe it makes them not worth watching.

A Beautiful Mind Film about maths.

Sounds so boring but its one of the BEST films I've seen, not boring at all and has a twist even though its a true story.

I haven't seen it but it seems a quirky film that could be good.

I thought No Country was disappointing too. I love the Coen Brothers so was expecting a lot better. I'd agree that most of those films listed are gash, or at least overrated, including Braveheart and Gladiator. Easily the best of them is Unforgiven for me.

i would probably go as far as to say it's my fav british film.
if you ever see it in the shop, or amazon, ya should pick it up.

its true - most films are basically rubbish, the filmakers would do well to focus on storyline, try makiing a film which actually moves people in some way, im amazed they make any money at all with the drss they serve up, ALL computer animated are dire, nearly all action films involve the same car chases, fights, sex scenes etc...
now take days of heaven...theres a film which has u entranced, good storyline, fantastic photography and music score...good acting etc

tony broke and big h showing some taste on here.

I have Malick as the only true great still making films. A visual genius, to make a cynic like me weep over Pochahontas in The New World is a rare trick.

Sadly he will clear the mutliplexes again this year with 'Tree of Life'. The population will pile in to see Brad Pitt and last 30 minutes tops. A few will slow down and sink into it though, and then they are hooked.

See any Malick on youtube, esp Thin Red Line. Pretentious garbage or Genius? I wasn't sure first time out either. They can't stop thinking about it. Even the haters can't leave it alone.

Report Jonnnytruant. • January 11, 2010 4:05 PM GMT
Malick is a first rate call.

But Guillermo Del Toro, Gilliam, Haneke and Herzog are still working so there are still legendary auteur's working imo.
Report Jonnnytruant. • January 11, 2010 4:06 PM GMT
also Pedro Almodóvar and Paul Greengrass.
Report Ghostdog • January 11, 2010 4:08 PM GMT
The Departed was one of his worst films, but they gave him a long service oscar for it. The oscars have nothing to do with the quality of a film.

If you want a laugh, have a look at the Guardian's top 100 of decade. Not funny for the over reliance on art films, though there is a bit of that.

They have Borat at number 2. LOL. Honestly.
Report Jonnnytruant. • January 11, 2010 4:11 PM GMT
The Departed is an unfortunate case as it's another example of Hollywood turning in a journeyman version of an incredible original, in this case the Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs, which is an incredible film.
Report Ghostdog • January 11, 2010 4:11 PM GMT
You are right of course. Herzog especially, but he's dissapointed me a bit with his mainstream stuff recently.

Greengrass getting nothing for United 93 is one of the worst oscar robberies ever.

The hapless Guardian have not got it in their top 100. They should be mocked for years for that list.

Caught moments of Love Actually about four times over christmas whilst itv had it on perma-loop. Was tragic seeing him acting the role of a man who's lost his wife after this year.

He does do relentless very well though.

And you're right re Herzog Ghostdog. Though I have faith for the future. Someone just needs to try and shoot him again. That'll jog him out of his fug.

Micheal Haneke is the future of cinema if he carries on his trend towards the more mainstream.

Saw his Code Unkown two weeks ago. Interconnected/disconnected fragments from the lives of a parisian actress, Malian immigrant and Romanian beggar. With some deaf and dumb kids and drum workshops thrown in.

Would go down a treat on here. Lol.

it's no Braveheart that's for sure!

Sometimes i think Downfall is a vision from the future of the last days of the Betfair Forums ;)

The flaw in this thread is though..... If it had said most films that my multiplex gets are ** i'd have whole heartedly agreed. But I am confident that if I knew a person and what they liked I could find 30-40 films every year that they loved. It's just about where you look.

It's the lack of imagination that gets me, the writers seem to see something that makes money and copy it, hence all the sequels and

Films about comic book super heroes,

Werewolves

Vampires

Wizards

**king rom coms, every one of them with the same premise.
Report Ghostdog • January 11, 2010 4:47 PM GMT
You are dead on johnny, really did lol at downfall. The multiplex and the art film have gone in opposite directions. A great classic like the Godfather would probably fail now, with it's pace and dark textures.

But as the man says, you can dig out great films. Don't be put off by the art tag. Proper acting, framing and real world timing have a hypnotic effect when done properly.

And Tarantino is probably the best link between the two worlds at the moment.

Any fans of Herzog, or curious, here he is being interviewed making Fitzcaraldo. Who says Germans don't have a sense of humour:
