when I used to cycle regular I had a Raleigh mountain bike as I was sick of getting punctures on a racing bike
By:
what's your budget, and where do you plan to cycle?

Don't get a racing bike if you're just getting back into it. Mountain bike, more stable and you can always put road tyres on it.
I always liked Kona mountain bikes, fantastic flow round corners, won't break. Can go from a few hundred to thousands with any quality brand. Know people who rave about Giant Trance, great real off road bike. |

Bicycle advice
Do yourself a favour buy an old steel framed British made bike for about £20 max. Modern bikes cost a fortune to buy but dont last, plus there is always the risk that you will only ride the bike 2/3 times. |

I've got a penny farthing - it's a real fann'y magnet.

you can pick up a decent mountain bike for that price, most bike shops will be selling their 2009 stock cheap to make way for the 2010 models.
Something like this http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Kona_Fire_Mountain_2009/5360039068/ would be a good value bike to start off with. |

Don't get a mountain bike - too slow
Sounds like you really need a hybrid Specialised/Scott/ Kona/Saracen/Ridgeback/Dawes all do good hybrid for around £300 http://www.evanscycles.com/categories/sale/complete-bikes/hybrid-bikes |
By:
never heard of a hybrid...apart from my fishing days....that sounds good....if it means I can go a bit faster for same effort.
By:
One thing, you can make a mountain bike faster, but you can't take a hybrid off road. Well, not for long.
I've got an old Kona Kileau mountain bike with road tyres that will go as fast as any hybrid. |

probably 3 or 400 shaky mainly on decent roads but occasionally canal bank. Hybrid will be ideal - you don't need a mountain bike to ride on a towpath |
By:
don't get a mountain bike if you 're only going on roads. cheap as *****racing bike imo.
