Due 31st Jan, prob got to pay about £1k in income tax, and something similar for NI.

Quite simple, I haven't got it and have got no access to borrow it to pay it.

What do HMRC do in this situation?? Can you pay arrears on the drip??

ian don't worry about it m8,I'm self-employed and am up to date but the lad I work with has still not paid his tax bill from 2 years ago.

he keeps getting reminders every 6 months with interest added (interest very small) and like yourself just does not have the money.

I left the prison service in 2006 to work with my m8,he was 28yrs with BT and trained me up.

After 6 months I sat my exams and got my accreditation to work on the network, best thing I ever done in my life :)

Apart from**ging 2 night workers when I was in the Army :p

It will take a month or so before they contact you, you will have interest added to the amount you owe but they will be understanding at first. So long as you pay it, there will be no problems.
Report Hearts.no1 • January 9, 2010 8:33 PM GMT
in essence Ian don't worry about it.
Report Ovalman. • January 9, 2010 8:33 PM GMT
+ they will accept installments but they will accept it over a period of time but if a payment is a day late they will come with a scythe and cut your**off.

Ooooovalman.

lets hope people you do work for dont have the same attitude of not worrying about paying
Report Dan Chipowski • January 9, 2010 8:40 PM GMT
The interest and penalties WILL add up.

If you are not in a position to pay it, you should inform them, and try to come to an installment or DD agreement.

Give them a ring first thing, don't wait till 31st Jan. If you just leave it without contacting them, they get very upset.
Report john310 • January 9, 2010 9:03 PM GMT
Could be wrong but just caught the end of some advert to so this, mentioning fines. best to let them no before it comes in.

You need to call them and set up a payment plan to avoid surcharges for non payment
Report punterfleecer • January 9, 2010 9:13 PM GMT
or else you'll need to deal with me
Report ONION • January 9, 2010 9:25 PM GMT
can only reitterate whats been said -explain situationto them before 31 . dont wait to hear from them first.
Report Do wah Diddy • January 9, 2010 9:46 PM GMT
GIVE THEM A RING AND THEY WILL SORT SOMETHING OUT WITH YOU,DONT LEAVE IT THEY START SENDING YOU PENALTIES IF YOU DONT PAY . GET IN TOUCH SOONER RATHER THAN LATER
Report Jim Hensen • January 9, 2010 9:54 PM GMT
stay in touch and make a payment plan or defferment, otherwise the penalites will soon dwarf the negligable interest.

I think, (do check), amounts less than a couple of grand can be put onto your tax code to be collected that way, which is the ultimate deferment, ie no interest, no penaties, and no hassle.

I read somewhere that extra measures for defferring tax arrears was put in place last year, so do check that too.

All that said, with the way sterling is going, you will soon be able to swap the debt for a pair of ratners earings, so I wouldn't worry about it.
Report Crisp77 • January 9, 2010 9:58 PM GMT
Under £2k can go on the tax code
Report madsimon • January 10, 2010 3:31 PM GMT
HMRC usually are undestanding but in my experience can be a bit random over latepayers .Sometimes you can put off owing tens of thousands for years with very little heat and other times they will threatent to bankrupt you over a couple of hundred quid thats a month late
Report madsimon • January 10, 2010 3:32 PM GMT
my advice be nice and humble to whoever answers the phone at their end.
Report madsimon • January 10, 2010 3:32 PM GMT
tbh if you really cannot pay a big tax bill the best unofficial advice is to not file your tax return especially if its more than you usually pay a year
