this quiz wasn't that easy imo.
keep your eye on the answering patterns and googlers are easy to spot - very quick correct answers sometimes and very slow correct answers at other times is very suspicious over the long term, damning i would say.
consistently slow correct answers as we saw tonight is also suspicious definitely, but i'll only be convinced when i see a few quick ones go in as well as they might just be slow refreshers and typers.

Drag, no what I meant is that googlers only score on hard questions, you had a very good mix
Report munch man • January 9, 2010 4:26 PM GMT
contrary to most quiz players it seems, i believe there are LOADS of googlers in these quizzes. I have looked closely at the patterns and I think i know who googles and who does not. i am not prepared to name those who i believe to google of course as, strong as the evidence is, there can never be genuine proof and I do not wish to falsely malign anyone.
Report The Dragon • January 9, 2010 4:34 PM GMT
i dont see how people get the time to google i tried it but was always too slow (out of interest)

also what is the point you are just deluding yourself.

i would hate to think that i was relegated last season over googling

makes you question the integrity of the leagues if you are right
Report munch man • January 9, 2010 4:35 PM GMT
i can usually google and answer before time up if i wanted to. have google open and ready in a new window and you can be quite quick about it.
Report The Dragon • January 9, 2010 4:38 PM GMT
ok bags i always wonder at what level to set the q,s

you dontwant to make them too easy so that everyone nows them

or too hard that everyone gives up

i always try to do a mix.

the prob is your own self judgement as im not as good as the top notch quizzers some of the q,s that i think are hard a lot of quizzers get them easily
Report The Dragon • January 9, 2010 4:39 PM GMT

Report Baggers • January 9, 2010 4:40 PM GMT
3/20 skinners is the right mix

You could tell EGS last night was a googler and if you check back, I made my suspicions clear when asking people to google what came 2nd in the 1984 2000g
Report munch man • January 9, 2010 4:42 PM GMT
yes dragon. googlers would not type the questions into google of course. they copy and paste, hit search, and the answer is normally visible in the headlines of the first one or two posts. somebody found a way around this and it should be adopted for all quizzes on here imo. i have caught a few people out in the past in my quizzes by deliberately doctoring the questions so the google gives out the wrong answer.
Report The Dragon • January 9, 2010 4:44 PM GMT
thanks bags bit worrying in terms of the leagues if munch is right.

is there a way to stop it ? suppose not you have to rely on peoples inegrity
Report munch man • January 9, 2010 4:45 PM GMT
there is a way to stop it. somebody found an ingenious way where if you copied the question into google it came up as NO RESULTS FOUND. this should be implemented and a speedy time up enforced - this would stop the googlers in their tracks 100%
Report The Dragon • January 9, 2010 4:45 PM GMT

Report The Dragon • January 9, 2010 4:47 PM GMT

Report munch man • January 9, 2010 4:47 PM GMT
we've talked about this before and everybody kept saying 20 seconds time up would stop it. BUT THIS IS FAR TOO LONG. 10 seconds is plenty of time to answer, or guess an answer, imo.
I think I can google certain answers and reply in about 6 seconds.

Hi Drag.. munch and I have had this conversation before.. and I agree 100% with him. My view is that the quizzes are tremendous fun and I don't see why my enjoyment should be spoiled just because some people google. Like munch I have Deffo caught out quite a few googlers.. some very surprising!! :D .. and also like munch I don't see any point in naming names. Let 'em get on with it. I am a strictly amateur quizzerer. I get a lot of enjoyment from playing, whether I win (increasingly rare nowadays as I get older and slower) or come well down the field.

Bring 'em on! :D
Report Dan Chipowski • January 9, 2010 5:14 PM GMT
I think you probably get one or two googlers on some quizzes, but they usually get tired and clear off.

I would be fairly certain none of the regular quizzers google. Some may indulge in copying from time to time.

As Easter said, let them get on with it.......all quizzes on here are a bit of fun and i'd rather come last (Which I do most of the time :D ) than win a few by googling.

keep up with this exact scrutiny charlie, it WILL expose the googlers over a much larger sample by identifying quick correct answers and slow correct answers by the same person. 10 questions is too small a range though. from your sample it might just mean the person you mention is a slow typer/answerer. and if you could highlight the CORRECT answers in bold this would also be a very useful indicator.
Report Easter 1916 • January 9, 2010 7:11 PM GMT
i try and answer immediately i see the question , even if it means embarassing myself on occasions by putting a stupid answer. if i'm late with a correct answer it's usually because i was preoccupied with something else. obviously there are various reasons why people may be slower with their answers - connection, typing ability, lack of a 'refreshable' index finger - as long as they are consistent and don't always get the right answer (algeria was a peach, artemis arguably better) then i think it best to give the benefit of the doubt.

I am usually one of the slowest to answer - a combination of a slow connection and poor typing speed.

This costs me points on a regular basis - do I also have to suffer being thought of as a googler?

I am pretty confident that the regular quizzers I play against are not googling, thiough I cannot be sure of course. There has been the odd occasion when I have been very suspicious, along with a lot of people, when 'guests' have produced late and correct answers on a regular basis.

Everyone who has seen me on these quizzes should know by now that I neither google or copy, and if they think I am, they can quite frankly go feck themselves!

If there is a wy to 'google-proof' the questions, I would be delighted - as I have nothing to fear.

I know there was some suspicion last year in the quiz leagues and would be all for the google proof questions

As a scorer, you get a feel for who is at it but I'm with the others guys, sometimes the question takes a bit of time to register or I'm each of two

As a general rule, I'm one of the 1st to answer a question but I am only 5km from the Betfair servers

Quizzes were fun about 4 or 5 years ago.

Last year a league was formed and it went haywire. Arguments, stewards enquires, committe meetings ffs, and in any quiz you get hardly any fun banter compared to the old quizzes.

If an Oxford educated genius got on here he'd be facked if he couldn't type fast.

These leagues are not fun for quite a few, and that's why some, mostly the slow typists, have dropped out.

They still are fun Charles.. as long as we don't take them too seriously or worry too much about googlers! Really enjoyed your quiz the other night.. also poppy's and GTs rank very highly in my list of the highly enjoyable. But for me (and I must emphasize the ME aspect of this) the leagues have become a tad too serious. A lot of people put in a stupendous effort last year to bring it all to a conclusion and mostly the same people will be putting in similar levels of effort this season.

So good luck and much enjoyment to those who take part. I will play for fun where I can. Mostly losing. Coming up with some frankly ridiculous answers ( who can forget my garbled 'long leather boots' to the question:'What was US General Ambrose Burnside mainly remembered for?' :D ) but very occasionally pulling off a stunning victory against all odds !! :)

Good luck all and remember:

Googlers will be shot at dawn! :^0

i agree with paddy when he says a lot of you are fine fellows and don't google, but please don't shoot the messengers like me when we say some regulars google. I am sure it is a fact and rather than be in denial over it, it would be better for everyone imo if the problem was eradicated via this anti googling system and quick time ups.
i feel i am in a group of second string, but honest, quizzers who have been **ed by googlers in the past and would definitely win more had there been absolutely no googling present in some of them.
