No I'm a big Bowie fan (Beatles biggest love) but never underesimate the role played by the King you won't see his like again either.

I agree Elvis was a good artist BUT

In my view he never wroye any of his music, it was all hand picked for him, the look the style the marketing etc all given to him.

You could ahve taken any good looking American Joe who could sing a bit and turned him into the Elvis of his day as music was just waiting for his like to come around.

evening Priest I know what you mean. Lennon was the greatest songwriter of them all imo.

However I appreciate your point but Elvis was 'no standin'he had charisma and stage pressence like no one has had since.

Evening yourself Howdi

Never really got into Elvis so haven't seen too much 'on stage' Elvis

Saying that bought the vynil copy of Elvis 40 greatest hits when i was younger and liked nearly everyone of them especially His Latest Flame and Suspious Minds.

Where are the Elvis, Bowie, Lennon and Hendrix of today?

Or even a Ray Davies or Brian Wilson?

I think a lot of it is to do with the fact that surely there is a limit to the notes available to musicians to mold into a song?

Must be hard to come up with music that doesn't sound like something already recorded.

Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree probaley the nearest to a Bowie, Lennon etc for song wrting and perforing musically original.

the best performance I've ever seen for sheer magic is Elvis doing Suspicious Minds live in about 1972 **g amazing.

I'd put Mr Bowie up there with McCartney and Wilson and a shade between John Lennon myself

Ive often thought that mate but muscians say that there is still millions of combinations but it makes sense to me. People will look back in 500 years time and wonder what the hell happened in the 60s for it all to happen at the same time. Bit like Denman & Kauto :D

The problem with Chuck Berry is the same as say the guy that invented the Commodore 64, nothing else around like it so instantly brilliant but quickly out dated imo

I enjoy his stuff of the later era The Stone Roses were a great band could have been legends if they hadn't fooked it up.

Another reason why Bowie, Lennen etc are so legendary is that most bands or artists only release 1 or 2 'classic' albums but they churned out music continually that never waned.

Queensryche one of my Fav bands but after 'Operation Mindcrime' THE seminal concept album (and the subject matter relevant today as when first recorded) they could only produce one other trult great album 'Empire' to follow it. Since then plenty of albums, most decent but never at the high of OM.

Bowie, Lennon is was one after another.

I couldn't agree more Priest. Knocking them out over 2-3 decades is what its all about. McCartney was a genius but even he lost it after age of 40 - Ill give Paul Weller an honourable mention. Saw him last week at a service station size of a horse these days :D
