Yes EGG its an Essex plate.
My mum bought the car new & bought a specialized number plate JCY 1 but two weeks after getting it we found the car had been scrapped before getting the plates so had to revert to the original OHV number, when I passed my test in 1978 my mum let me use the car & I bought it off her for next to nothing a few months later.

Believe it or not the 71 Capri was an automatic, back then only about 1% of cars were not manual, I passed on a manual but I dont think in over 30 years I have driven one more than a dozen times.

Me any my best mate used to dabble in 2nd hand cars for sale.

Best one without doubt was a Mk2 Jaguar.
Had all sorts, Humber Snipe, Cortinas galore, Capris, Beetles, had a deisel Corsair - facking pig of a car, morris minor that fell to bits on the A2, an old Merc that got destroyed in a banger race, a Rover 90 - all aluminium body, couldn't remember all the cars as we had too many over the years.

As a fellow lover of them, my honourable friend Orioles restores Jaguars as a hobby, and he will leave you in no doubt as to the cost of such a mission.

'It ain't cheap' is a rough summation.

I drive a 1995 XJ40, which does its best to bankrupt me when it goes wrong, but I keep hanging in there.

another car I had at the time was a Jaguar xj6 the 4.2 series three, that was a nice car but a couple of years ago i drove one it drove like a antique, but it does get people looking at you, mine was silver about the best colour, and talking of people looking at you years ago my parents had a Silver Shadow, people used to give us the two fingers in that, how things have changed!
Report Big Charlie • January 7, 2010 10:57 AM GMT
My first XJ6 was a facking nightmare. I bought a J reg 2.8 model and the bodywork wasn't as light as it is these days. It shifted, no doubt about that, but I lived 50 miles away from work, and the petrol consumption was astronomical, apart from the mechanical problems. It died in London when the gearbox packed up. I had had enough of it by then, and scrapped it.

the piston gobbler charlie!
Report Big Charlie • January 7, 2010 11:26 AM GMT
Old timer mechanic in a garage told me that.

I could hear a rattle so I took it to him.

He put a stick of wood on the engine and his ear on the other end.

' Upper timing chain, 'got a radio ?' he said

I said ' Of course it facking has.'

He said ' Turn it up and ignore the rattle. I could repair it today and the bastid could go again tomorrow... and one more thing.....'

' What.'

'Do yourself a favour, get rid of this piece of sh1t, get a 4.2 model, because the way you drive (we obviously knew each other) you're going to blow number one piston right out of the engine'
Report Prima Donna • January 7, 2010 11:36 AM GMT
A freind of mine had a 2.8 and decided to make it into a estate,so he got a old ford escort est,cut them both up welded the two together, when we got to see it he asked me what Ithought?A forking mess what a shame to do that to a nice car,he drove it around for a few months, people always commented on it,but it was a terrible thing to do after he got fed up with it and scrapped that one to.He called it "The Escuar".
