and it always snowed in jan and Feb. This sort of weather was normal and expected. Young canaryboy on another thread disputes my assertion that this was the norm for winters not all that long ago.
There's no need to go back to the winter fairs on the Thames but there must be plentyof memories from some of the more senior forumites.

I doubt the climate has changed significantly in the life time of anyone alive today. Hwoever the sensationalist reaction to the adverse weather is surely a new thing. Just takes one poor little darling to get cold toes and the whole country snowballs (pun intended) out of control

Only two or three official white Christmasses in the whole of the 20th century.

Agree with Reyes, worst winter in my lifetime (born 52) apart from 1963. "Snowed in" of Mid Sussex.

I remember many years where it snowed in the 60s and 70s, also the fog and smog that stopped the traffic and yeah people then just got on with it.

They didn't have the news people telling them to stay indoors and not travel then though.
Councils had enough grit for the roads instead of bleating about extraordinary circumstances after two days ffs.

It didn't happen all that often, it just sticks in the memory more if it's very cold and slippery out.

I'm 31 and can't remember a white christmas. The one just gone wasn't really a white christmas - cos it didn't snow. Think we'vhad a few winters when no snow falls at all.

All this panicing doesn't realy exist imo. Just papers bangining on about it so that all the numbskulls who love nothing more than saying "a few bits of snow and the whole country goes to sh.it. What a fkin country" have some ammunition.

mugs.

This is nothing (can only speak for where i live) winters were much worse late mid-late 50's to early 60's. Snow lasted 2 months, thick snow at that.

No I don't.

Study is correct about the selectivity of memory - average stuff gets forgotten and only the extreme are remembered.

That said, there were some cold winters in the early 1980s when I was a lad.

My dad opened a betting shop in late 1962, within weeks of it opening came the shocking winter of 63, no racing for best part of three months, it put him out of buisness before he had basically begun.

I'm mid-50's and during the 60's there were always 3 or 4 snowfalls each winter when you could go tobogganing etc. When at secondary school cannot remember school ever being closed. Teachers lived closer in those days and pupils would walk 2-3 miles to school as a matter of course.
