I'm thinking about buying an old Suzuki Jimny to get around in all this mud and snow. A local dealer has one on the forecourt at £4,000 (54 plate, 50,000 miles). I'm assuming that used car dealers are not having a great time post-Christmas so I should be aiming to end up at £2,500 - £3,000. Any thoughts?

well its a starting point.its unlikly the margin would be that high on a £4000 car. I will take a look at the trade price and get back to you

im assuming they price things up to be as attractive as possible nowadays , the thought of him knocking off £1,000 - 1,500 would be amazing to me, unless there is somethign wrong with car and he wants rid of it, not that i know anythign about cars, im guessing he will knock something off but want you to buy other things in return

It's a long time since I bought a car for cash so I have no skills to speak of. It sounds as though you're both saying that the dealer is taking some of the pain in the windscreen price rather than keeping that price high and expecting to have to drop a long way.

just cant see him knocking 25% to 37.5% off woudl think getting 10% off and you would be doing well, no idea though to be honest though
Report inspiron • January 5, 2010 2:31 PM GMT
£3550 would be an acceptable price. knocking him down a grand just will not do.
Report Diploire • January 5, 2010 2:33 PM GMT
No way will you get 25% off as he's probably paid in the region of £2500-£3000 for it in the first place he might come down a couple of hundred.

£4000 is top money from a franchised dealer£3750 from a independant dealer and £3320 private market.I would say he give around £2750 for it.So in my personal opinion if its got some history and 12 months MOT. bid him £3000 and you will proably end up somewere in the middle, but the nearer to £3250 would be preferable

the Jimnys (allegedly) have a habit of turning over ...so I wouldn't be trusting one on ice and snow ...Good Luck if you do get it ... :0

you won't be the only silly c*** who has decided he needs a clapped out 4x4 monstosity after 1/2" of snow, you'd be better trying to knock'em down on as convertible.

very-valuable - many thanks

Richard LL - it may be half an inch where you are but it's sheet ice where I am and I live at the top of a steep hill. Journalists hate the jimny but owners love them.
