anyone care to tell me if you took a gap year, been talking to friends and we are seriously considering going traveling for a full year, currently studying in years 2 on a 4 year course plan was to take a gap year after the 3rd year then come back for the final year but 1 m8 pointed out why dont we just go traveling after we finish our degrees? so my question is to anyone who took a gap to go traveling or something why did you and why didnt you just wait till your course finished?

Probably doesnt matter when you go travelling, there`ll still be nothing for you workwise post degreee

wel in fairness, uni degrees are pretty intense and by taking a year off to go on the** and live it up, you're gonna make it a lot harder on yourself

Very true Den, most keep the focus and I think that's best. Travel after...

What I would say is don't just go "travelling", do something like charity work etc that will keep you busy while still being enjoyable. I know a few people on a gap year who are bored already and regretting it.

90% of us are at uni, a few others have been doing an apprenticeship, it kind of finishes after the month in june 2011 when we will finish our work placements so it will be good if we went then as they wont have a job so can afford to drop everything and go, if we waited a year later till we finished our 4th year at uni then it may be a problem for them although they said they would be happy to get a in between job like working in a bar or whatever to raise more cash to travel then after that year of traveling go find a full time job relating to the course that they've been working on. just seems a bit sly that they have to wait a year if we do decide to wait and go after finishing our degrees.

well its not charity but 1 m8 said he saw on some holiday channel that in florida you can get part time jobs in places like disneyland and live in a holiday home for like 2months and get a decent deal
Report Phil Lynott • December 30, 2009 12:17 AM GMT
Yea charity was just an example, just meant that it would probably get boring quick without any sort of structured activity, as strange as that might sound. That sounds pretty good.

i hear you phil m8 lazing around on some beach isnt our kind of thing, we'd most definitely make sure where we plan to go theirs something we can do

It's Uni students duty to take a gap year holiday to some god forsaken st*t hole of a country, it's only when they get murdered that a place becomes available for someone else.
Report big-game-player • December 30, 2009 2:03 AM GMT
the reason most go on a gap year (as i did) :) so you get a couple more years of freshers especially if you have to do a placement year as well

either that or pick a course where you can go away for a few terms
Report casemoney • December 30, 2009 2:07 AM GMT
i would take a year out ,cpould be another 50,000 degree holders on mcdonalds waiting lists when u get back ..
Report Blue and White army • December 30, 2009 2:29 AM GMT
I did a "year out" before I went to uni.
I worked in a laboratory and it gave me the "heads up" when I got my chemistry degree.
I'm now a p1shhead with nine ex wifes and fourteen kids ;(
Report Max and Paddy • December 30, 2009 2:44 AM GMT

I suggest you read Can't be Arsed by richard wilson , it is the answer to all the 101 things you must do before you die books. It gives going travelling and gap year bollockks the pillorying they deserve.

i did a year travelling in 2000-01 after uni.

www.bunac.org

can sort you out a visa for usa for the summer. you will never get an easier chance to go to usa and just do what you like for 4 months getting work when and where you please. I did it and got decent work in a kitchen on martha's vineyard, was the best time of my life - p.ssed every night was sh.agging a beautiful eastern european waitress, lovely surroundings. was fkin great. Thn went to australia and worked and drank, then nz, brazil argntina and home. the absolute fkin bo.llox. don't know how easy it is to get work out there now with the recesson, but sure there will be something if you're a hard worker and not shy. And tbh it will be hard to find a proper job n this counry for the next 12 months.

Do it.
Report positively4thsteet • December 30, 2009 8:02 AM GMT
didn't proper read your first post.

i took my year out when i finished uni. did take a year out between year 2 and 3, but that was a work placment.
If you go travelling it would be tempting to quit uni on your return.

If I was you i'd get in touch with bunac and still spend 4 months in usa for the summer. would be the absolute b.ollox imo. then go back to uni.
Report positively4thsteet • December 30, 2009 8:11 AM GMT
just checked. it is nearly a grand all in for the work usa package, including flights. A lot of money i suppose, but should be well capable of earning $400/week while you're there, save $200/week do that for 3 months and you have about two and half grand in dollars left. can get a monthly ticket on amtrak(trains) or greyhound(buses) for less than 500 bucks and you have 2000 bucks spending money while visiting as much of america as you please. You would have the time ofyour life, I did.

Wish I didn't have to go to work in january.

exactly thats what we were saying, theirs no rush to get a real job we want long term and leaving for a year could be a good thing in the grand scheme of things, really appreciate that link m8 was thinking about how we were gonna get a visa to work etc in some of the countries.

I disagree. Most of the people reading the CVs are idiots who have simliar rubbish on their own CVS. They are all impressed by the joke qualifications that children today pass.
Look at the OP on this thread and read the rubbish he posts on the politics forum. 20 years ago he would have left school at 16 not gone to university.
Report speedypro • December 30, 2009 2:45 PM GMT
HC you may be right, I was thinking of CV readers actually recruiting for a proper job, manufacturing or engineering, I concede there is a thread of ineptness perpetuated in the civil and finance sector.
