You should have a scan.I did mine in Sept.scan showed 80% tear.Op. in Oct. followed by 6wks in plaster followed by six in Achilles walker.Just able to start driving again after some physio but full recovery another 6 wks min. Longer you leave it the worse it will be to repair.

Doc explained that until the leg is opened the extent of the surgery needed cannot be assessed. With mine it was a cut about six inches in length from the top of my heel. If damage is excessive they may have to perform a V-Y plasty which will mean cutting into either side of your calf as well to retrieve enough tendon to repair the damage.Recovery time will be considerably longer in that case.

Thanks cooperman - gives me some idea what to expect

Unless you are a high acheiving athlete I wouldn't have the operation.

If it was a complete rupture your calf muscle would be up around your knee.
I saw a guy snap his achilles while training on a track. Looked like he'd had his entire lower leg blown off, poor guy was pretty much in tears. Don't think he ran again for at least 8 months. There's a big difference between tearing it and completely snapping the thing. Sounds nasty either way though, gl fella. |

i was lying on the floor for 20 mins to try an get my breath back! 6 weeks in cast followed by 4 weeks build up and physio back playing all sports after 10 weeks so not too bad ps im a very fit 23 yr old, might be different for an overweight middle age waste of space |

know how you feel matem i ruptued mine 2 years ago playing in a charity football match, iam mddle aged spent 10 or so weeks in plaster up to my knee, had to go back to the hospital every 3 weeks and have my foot moved into differant postions, made full recovery thanks for betfair , otherwise i would have been driven mad from boredom, went back to work after 3 months after physio from a very nice girl at my local hospitol , good luck mate

If u snapped it properly you'll be longer than 6 - 8 weeks matey. Swelling didn't die down for me for over a year...and good luck getting ur calf muscle back the same size as it was b4 u went into plaster.

very true my calf was at least half the size of my other one after only 6 weeks in plaster |

It's a horrible place to get injured. Take A LOT of time to recover and find a really good physio.
I got achilles tendonitis from running and was still struggling 8 months later, and that's nothing compared to snapping it. |

Just returned from physio, balancing on a board with roller underneath(tricky),calf raises(painful) and other exercises designed to cause excruciating pain. She actually looked quite pleased when i suggested she'd been thrown out of the SS for cruelty. If she says no pain no gain, i swear i'll be up for assault.
