Warning could be spoilers :

The plot, which is based on events covered by several chapters of Brown's book as well as other sources on Charles Eastman, revolves around three main characters: Charles Eastman né Ohiyesa (Adam Beach), a young, Dartmouth-educated, Sioux doctor held up as living proof of the alleged success of assimilation; Sitting Bull (Schellenberg), the proud Sioux chief who refuses to submit to U.S. government policies designed to strip his people of their identity, their dignity and their sacred land

Brown's book, a welcome change in it's day, was about more than the Sioux and covered a number of other tribes and their battles with the whites. Some of it about the Sioux has been superceded today with more modern research.

Sitting Bull in this film was made to look something of a dictator which would be totally against Sioux culture. He was also never a 'chief', as he said himself. They didn't really have 'chief's' as the Americans wanted to believe, but Headmen of small bands but they were never that effective as the main power and influence was in the hands of the medicine men and warrior societies. Evidence of that at Wounded Knee.
Sitting Bull was a medicine man/spiritual leader in the period of this film and never really embraced the Ghost Dance faith.

The saddest part of this whole massacre apart from the obvious deaths was that the american Government saw fit to award over 20 congressional medals of honour which far far outweighed the amount awarded to soldiers in the World Wars.

This to soldiers who basically sh@t themselves and murdered a great many of their own soldiers in the confusion, also the awards were given to soldiers who hunted down on horseback the women and children fleeing and murdered them when found.

Not one of Americas greatest days truth be told.
