The ability to accelerate in the final furlong is class.

I agree with PDC and Bill.

IF..... Rudyard Kipling
IF you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream - and not make dreams your master; If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!' If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, ' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch, if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son! Not about class, but it might as well be. |

Yes. Well said History Maker.

this turning fast into my fav thread of the night, not only the greatest horse ever but now the greatest poem also makes an appearance, i am not a man of art or leisure in any way but i defy anyone not to become moved by the poem if, rudyard kipling must have had some brainwave when writing this epic verse,

By:
The following was originally attributed to Kipling but later Orwell and then Churchill got the credit:
We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm. Very profound. |
By:
Perhaps I should have explained myself a litle more fully. I was refering to class in people not horses. History Maker is on the right lines. This thread follows on from the 'Well Educated' thread

pox.
i always rember him storming down the outside to get revenge on sharastani in the arc. if he was given a better ride in the derby previous he would have won that also |
By:
primma i think you can blame me for deviating other posters away from your origonal aim , with my quickfire reply to certain racehorses, i apologies profusely for doing so
By:
Alex, I agree. Dancing Brave was a superb horse. IMO beter than STS, but I also think Shahrastani was very underated. I think he showed his class in the Irish Derby, I am not so sure that Dancing Brave would have beaten him that day.
By:
That ok Pox, i've done it myself
By:
I don't think any misunderstanding was made about the original meaning of the thread, Primma Donna and PDC.
This is Chit Chat! But, as is often the case, a salient post (this time, made by History Maker) brings it back on track. Nothing wrong with any diversions, though! |

alexander i that day had the biggest bet ever in my lifetime on dancing brave even to this day i have not matched it. that race holds special memories for me not because of the cash that i won that day , but in which the manner it was won, the best horserace i have ever seen he mullered them on the outside in course record time , without doubt the best racehorse i have ever seen
By:
Oh, very well, I'll change my statement to long legs, slim but not overly so, and an ability to reserve swearing for bedroom antics.
(I'm talking about women here, men don't possess class.) |
By:
all about opinions primma, and i dont want to turn this into a this would have beat that scenario, but dancing brave was a freak and as soon as i saw it win the guineas i knew it was a special horse , which dont come along to often in a lifetime. i was happy to see another this past year in sea the stars, and maybe in my lifetime would like to see another before i meet my end
By:
the only other horse that i hold close in my affection is giants causeway due to its sheer never say die attitude.
that horse was a true gritty animal |
By:
Pox Dr, I too remember his win the 2000gns, he was an incredibly charismatic horse who I will too won't forget. I think you will see one more, poss better than STS. He might be St Nicholas Abbey, Triple Crown winner this year?
Billkiller, that would certainly be a good starting point, but I would argue that men can have class |
By:
Suit yourself, PD, but I've never seen a man with nice legs.
By:
hope you are right primma they dont come along to often though
