I am lucky enough not to have to watch my pennies, Barry, but there are plenty on here that have to and I do not think it is very nice of you to take the p i s s out of them.

I just have the one drink there each night, bito. I read a book or the daily newspaper. When you live alone, no boyfriend and self employed ( although I am currently being lazy and not working ) if I did not get out of the flat is would drive me crazy. I do not keep strong drink or sweets in the house so I go out each night, have one drink in my local and then buy a small bottle or can and some sweets and come home. Wild life eh :)

There is one in Crystal Palace round the corner from my local that I go to to see my mates, The Postal Order it is called. It is full of the great unwashed as a rule so give it a swerve. Besides, my local there shows all the horse racing and all my mates in Sarf London are punters although the beer is three or more times the price so that´s where I go.

Slippy, I would love to go into a racing pub but I have felt very uncomfortable when I have tried - there are hardly any women there. The great thing about Wetherspoons is that there are women there and for me that is the most important thing. They have also got great alcoves so I can read in peace. I think the clientele differs to where they are situated. In my one you only get a few chavs in the summer sitting outside in the garden. Wetherspoons are also very big so a woman on her own does not stand out so much. When I have tried small pubs I have felt all eyes on me.

Camden Weatherspoons!! jesus!

A stunning example of the chaim imo! this gaff vaguely reminds me of the clientele that once used to frequent the legendary "Scotsman" pub in Kings Cross
Report HRH The Lager Khan • January 2, 2010 10:03 AM GMT
Too cold out for lurking round car parks and laybys with Stan Collymore.
Report annie. • January 2, 2010 1:20 PM GMT
For posters who have yet to frequent a Wetherspoons do not let the above replies put you off. There are over 700 and I am sure you can find one to your satisfaction. I have visited several and I do not recognize the descriptions above. Maybe the fact that I do not visit the ones in chavvy areas is a factor. This is not a recommendation for Wetherspoons, as I believe they are badly managed, but, maybe because I am a woman, they are the best of a bad job. I would love to have a proper local but so far my efforts to find one have come to nothing.
Report HRH The Lager Khan • January 2, 2010 3:02 PM GMT
As a favour to you, and purely in the name of consumer research, I am volunteering to accompany you to your local for a bargain drink. We will then keep visiting different pubs until you find one you are happy with, even if it takes hours, days, months or even years.

Is it true that Wetherspoons buy up the beer returned to breweries and serve that ?

I'm not sure beer ages that well.
Report casemoney • January 2, 2010 3:14 PM GMT
there is a strong smell of pish in most wetherspoons...
Report Rampant Rabbit • January 2, 2010 3:14 PM GMT
They buy when from breweries when its close to sell by date ( ie 2 or 3 weeks) and then churn it out

hence some many good value guests ales
Report Rampant Rabbit • January 2, 2010 3:14 PM GMT
Over in Northern Ireland they run out if there is a week of strormy seas as they dont but from Bass or Guiness locally over here

Your highness, you can now tell women how you gave a woman agony and extasy at the same time...

I am suffering from that bug going around, a nasty cold and chesty cough. Unfortunately, your post to me set me off - it would normally should have been pleasant hysterics but today was a painful episode of dry, racking coughs. Thank You :)
Report HRH The Lager Khan • January 2, 2010 4:07 PM GMT
Er, you're welcome. I look forward to setting you off again in extasy when you are feeling better. Belated happy new year and get well soon.
