My dad told me over breakfast morning after, I was about eight, never forgotten it.

"Dazzler" Joe Cornelius from Bermondsey South London.
Would have loved to see him fight Bert Assirati, who was still British Champion at 50, I believe..

They were just b4 my time but remember seeing posters advertising Joe's fights.
Peter Maivia -The Grandfather of The Rock of WWF fame was a regular visitor. Do you remember THe Wild Man Of Borneo or Oddjob or THe Mighty Chang or Yuri Borienko or Johnny Yearsley?

Hi Spirit - The old mans memory is better than mine!!. The fight was in Brighton NOT Lewes, and Assirati won.
Other info volunteered - Assirati was "champion when he was old", he was a "turk or something" plus Dazzling Joe used to run the Five Bells at Chailey (Sussex)"
I read him the list above, and the name George Kidd caused great excitement - "flyweight", "fast as anything" and multiple other plaudits.
I have got to print off the entire thread for him!!!!

Also on the bill was 'Kendo Nagasaki' except this Kendo was about 5 foot with a big fat beer belly. I wonder how many Kendos there were up & down the country hiding under the mask of the real one?

I was pretty sure that Bert won as he "never" lost!
I walked on Lewes Racecourse recently as we go on a 6 mile walk thru' "Blackcap" past Lewes Racecourse and some fences are still there!
George Kidd was supreme.
There was a glrious time where McManus/Pallo/Johnny Saint/Kellett/Vic Faulkner and Bert Royal were all in the same weight division ( or thereabout!)...

Re your walk - Which direction do you do it?. We do the same walk from Wolstonbury over Ditchling Beacons/Blackcap to Lewes ending with a beer in the Harveys Tap Room. Long way but worth it.
Re George Kidd - some more info would be good, I will google him but Dad has very little to what I have given, except stuff relating to "god given".
Thanks SpiritRe Bert - Dad said he was good!!Re your walk - Which direction do you do it?. We do the same walk from Wolstonbury over Ditchling Beacons/Blackcap to Lewes ending with a beer in the Harveys Tap Room. Long way but worth it. Re George Kid

Blackburn....Thats it! From Ditchling Beacon thru' the open fields past Lewes Racecouse and to the left of the Stables ( that apparently were the Main Stand) then onto the Main Road and turn left for 1,000 yards to the Pub on the left.
Not over impressed with the food, which is VERY unusual for me as I'm not fussy. Do you know The Pub? I'm really guessing-"Chalk Pit" ???

I only went to watch wresting live once, I was on a course in Buxton and there was an event at the Town Hall. One match involved Kid Dynamite. He was about 17 or 18, skinny as a rake, very athletic, unlike all of the other blokes waddling round the ring.
A few years later I saw he had moved to the States where he had put on lots of weight and muscle.
No wonder so many of them die before their time.

Thanks for the reply Spirit. We do the walk from Wolstonbury as we park at a friends at the foot of that hill. Don't use the CP, we go straight down into town, another mile and the Harvey Tap Room is a bar in the side street opposite the Brewery.

Les Kellett and Jim Breaks, and not just because they were Bradford lads. Both hard as nails and very skilful wrestlers, but also great comics in the ring.
