The typical festive nut assortment gives you Almods, Hazelnuts, Walnuts & Brazil Nuts.

For me, walnuts were always high on the list as a youngster, because they were the easiest to crack. They are quite the bitterest of the four, but then again, is not coffee bitter? They also provide the most meat once cracked.
Almonds I always find are the hardest to open. They are sweet, but we all well-versed with the taste from marzipan, sugar almods etc. Where is the orginiality?
Hazelnuts I like, but shelling I find a fraught process. Often the shell will fly everywhere. Often the nut will smash along with the shell, negating eating pleasure.
The brazil nut I find a curious beast. V. hard to crack given it's triangular contruction, but the fruit is milky and juicy. But how on earth do they ever crack a brazil whole for the chocolates?

In short gentlement, I find myself at a crossroads. I don't know which to exclude and which to pronounce puil of the year. Is anyone in a more definitive moos nut-wise?

Walnuts - easy to crack but very hard to crack whole. And then there's them papery bits that taste rank as for that matter, do the walnuts.
Hazelnuts - don't share your problem with these. Easy to crack whole. No real challenge though. Taste OK.
Almonds - virtually impossible to crack without a vice. Disappointing end product.
Brazil - squeezy...squeezy...squeezy..CRACK!! of feck it's gone everywhere. A nightmare.

We have pecans sometimes, but I'veusualyl given up by then

doubt you would do that with this tub as it's 6" diameter

JOMO re Brazil Nuts, I am told that if you put them in the oven @ 170c for 15 mins the shells become brittle and are easier to shell. Please report back your success rate

aside pistacios I buy them shelled. Blanched Almonds far superior imo, and pecans far better than walnuts. Brazils are the muts nuts imo, and the only one worth shelling if you have to. the secret to shelling them is to crack them fast and hard about 1/4 to 1/3 of its length, and then gently crack again at the midpoint.

I am allergic to cashews, but I have been in/on the worlds largest cashew nut tree :-)
