Don't see why not. Jesus took a bit of a gamble trying to convince people he was the son of a god.

It would depend on which religion.

There is nothing in either the old or new testaments that forbids betting. Well, so I'm reliably informed. I haven't read them myself, but it's good enough for me. I was told this by a couple of church goers.

Well, you need to be weak-minded, superstitious and unable to make your own way in life to be religious, so I would imagine that an addiction to gambling is almost inevitable.

Betfair is a temple and we all worship Fortuna.

I'll get me sacrificial goat.

Christians can justify any conduct with reference to their God, but I'm pretty sure Buddhism does not allow gambling! Maybe it's because they don't need a god.

There's devotion and devotion, obviously ;)

The major version of Christianity support the notion of private property. If you have money or possessions then you are allowed to give them away for any reason or no reason as long as nobody who relies on you suffers because of it. You are also allowed to accept money or goods from others as long as you do not ** them out of their property.

It follows that if you can give a man some money, you can give it conditionally, such as only if a particular horse fails to win. He is entitled to make the same but opposing offer to you. That's called betting.

However, if you already know the result then you are obliged to tell him so. If he still wants to bet because he thinks you are wrong then that's fine.

**ing in any form is forbidden, as is taking an unfair advantage such as expert card players playing against novices. Bookmaking, where you make a number of bets in the knowledge that you stand to make a profit no matter what happens is permitted because each bet is moral on its own.

There you have it. If you let your wife and kids starve because you can't keep out of the bookies or you place bets on here when you know the result but your opponents don't, you are sinning. If you only make fair bets with money that is not essential to your dependents then, win or lose, you commit no sin.

Bless you my brethren. Somebody will be round with a plate in minute.

Catholics can bet:

Paddy and Mick went to Rome on a religous jaunt. They visited the vatican and St Peter's Cathedral and saw two guards standing by the pope's room. Paddy had a quick word with them and slipped them a few euros and the two of them were allowed in for a quick, special audience with the pope; They went in and saw him sat in his chair, motionless and speechless. The walked up and noticed he was white as a sheet and not breathing. They touched him, he was cold. He was dead. Paddy and Mick couldn't believe it and quickly scuttled out before they got implicated. They wandered the streets of Rome considering their find. They decided they could make something from this, they stood outside a bookies and considered their options. They decided to pool funds and have a punt. 200 euros they came up with and Paddy went in the bookies to have a punt. The pope was 100-1 to die that day. Paddy came out with his ticket and sure enough "The pope is dead" was all over the front pages of the papers. mega world news. They went back to the bookies and paddy went in with his ticket. he emerged 5 minutes later penniless.

"What's wrong Paddy" said Mick.
"They wouldn't pay up" said Paddy.
"That's ridiculous, I saw you go in and put the bet on, it is all over the papers - he is dead, no doubt about it" said Mick
"I'm sorry Mick, but the trouble is...... I doubled it up with the Archbishop of Canterbury."

i am not weak minded or superstitious, i actually go against the grain on most religious issues, never mind contemporary ones.

The Bible does not specifically condemn gambling, betting, or the lottery. The Bible does warn us, however, to stay away from the love of money (1 Timothy 6:10; Hebrews 13:5). Scripture also encourages us to stay away from attempts to
