Got a copy of 'The road' by Cormac McCarthy for Christmas.

Picked it up yesterday and just finished it now. Absolutely blew me away.
I've read literally hundreds of books and I'm struggling to think of one that's gripped and transfixed me like this one did.
Not read any of his before but will seek out more. To anyone who likes thought provoking, stimulating literature I can't reccomend this book too highly. Not a wasted word in the entire text. Stripped down, spartan prose that gets a hook in your head and drags you into this world.

Read it now before the film comes out. (I've seen the trailer and it looks like they've 'Holywoodised' it a bit).

is it similar to Viz?
Report d13phe • December 29, 2009 8:16 PM GMT
what is it about?
Report shatner's bassoon • December 29, 2009 8:17 PM GMT
Haha - yeah Burt...it's set in a post apocolyptic world where society has been all but wiped out after Johhny fart pants ate one too many sprouts. Should be just your cup of rosie!

sounds like the 80's then

Is it easy reading?
Report shatner's bassoon • December 29, 2009 8:21 PM GMT
D13phe - hard to summarise but a man and his son struggle for survival after an unnamed catastrophe has devestated the world. You're with them from the start and on a simple level the story grips, but there are so many more deeper layers. The sort of book that makes you think and I re-read several pages just for the shear joy of the language.

is there loads of swearing in it then?

Another of his novels, Blood Meridian is one of my favourites, so I'd certainly recommend you give that one a try.

love books, i'll look out for this one, thanks, be good to see more recommendations on here

What type of stuff do you like?
Report shatner's bassoon • December 29, 2009 8:30 PM GMT
Will do Jociclub. I enjoyed the film of 'No Country For Old Men' which was one of his, so I'll have to seek that one out too. Just worried that I've started with his best so it'll be hard to follow that!

cedarmaster - the wife's just finished the first of Steig Larsen's trilogy 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', which she's raving about. heard lots of good things about that.
Report Ronaldinho's dentist • December 29, 2009 8:33 PM GMT
is there a common theme to these books or are they all different?
Report JOCI Club • December 29, 2009 8:57 PM GMT
Blood Meridian surpasses all of McCarthy's other novels for me, which is saying something, as a lot of them are really very good.

A very dark, bloodthirsty western, full of scalpings, hangings, destroyed villages, immorality and a very disturbing, yet original portrayal of the 'wild west' in the 1840s. A memorable set of repugnant characters, the most memorable of whom is 'The Judge'.

UNDERS BET
A jaded Villa and a defensive Lpool could well make this a low scoring game and as its difficult to see either side scoring twice this bet looks to be the best in this match.
DRAW
As its not easy to see either side scoring twice a low scoring draw [0-0 or 1-1] looks likely.
IN SUM - This is a match too soon for Villa and I can see Lpool getting a

sorry about that.

shatner's bassoon, as asked earlier, is there swearing in the book? ie f word?

Post Office by Charles Bukowski. Absolute top drawer.
Report shatner's bassoon • December 29, 2009 9:12 PM GMT
No swearing whatsoever Mitchell. In fact very sparse dialogue.

gotta say i found the road the most overrated book i have read in a long time...derivative of so many post-apocalyptic stuff of the 60s and 70s

McCarthy has a beautifully lucid yet simple style of writing.
Report cedarmaster • December 30, 2009 9:22 AM GMT
shatners . . yes read his millenium trilogy and they are all excellent, they are very slow to get going so you have to stick with the first hundred pages or so but well worth doing
Report shergarburger • December 30, 2009 11:04 AM GMT
shatners. cormac mccarthy is one of my favourite authors but i'm afraid to say i found the road to be too bleak and gloomy. i agree with a previous poster about blood meridian which is the first one of his i read and i also loved all the pretty horses, the crossing and cities of the plain (a trilogy). shame the film of all the pretty horses wasn't very good.
