This mental illness malarkay I don't really get. Anyone who goes around killing and raping and stuff is by and large mentally ill by definition. But the public have to be protected. There are certain crimes that you should get life meaning life for imo. But not death penalty.

I don't really believe that people are born evil, they're pretty much a function of their upbringing and surroundings etc. The aims of the criminal justice system should be the following in this order imo:

1 Protect the Public
2 Deterrent
3 Punishment
4 Rehabilitation

Almost right. Take 3 out. Punishment is basically just revenge, which the state shouldn't really be sanctioning. In any case the deterrent part will in most cases be severe enough to satisfy those who want the convicted to be punished.

incidentally, while i haven't really been following this, i understand the chinese don't accept that he was mentally ill. i'm not saying they are right, of course.

the whole thing beggars belief
Report canaryboy • December 29, 2009 11:15 AM GMT
