American singer and actress Eartha Kitt has died at the age 81, a family friend has said.
Kitt was said to have been suffering from colon cancer.
She was one of the few artists to be nominated in the Tony, Grammy and Emmy award categories and was a stalwart of the Manhattan cabaret scene.

I fancied her when she was in her 30's and I was a teenager.

Very saucy lady.

She was on ITV a couple of days ago, never heard her as the sound wasn't on, tm, but she seemed okay then (unless it was a recording) she was taking to Philip Schofield.

I've often used it, but as I say I shall pay my respects by using alternatives for the next week.

The late music and screen legend Eartha Kitt has lost her battle with cancer - but she will be remembered as much for her political and social ethics as for her talent.

Orson Welles described her as 'the most exciting woman in the world'

Kitt, who died aged 81 from colon cancer, was once blacklisted for her outspoken criticism of the Vietnam war.

In 1968 she almost lost her career after telling US President Lyndon Johnson at a White House luncheon: "You send the best of this country off to be shot and maimed. No wonder the kids rebel and take pot."

She later learned the FBI and CIA had begun investigating her and she spent the next several years working in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Manila.

But it was her move to Europe which sparked the revival of a career already into its third decade.

The self-proclaimed "sex kitten" was born in the South Carolina cotton fields in 1927.

I do not have an act. I just do Eartha Kitt. I want to be whoever Eartha Kitt is until the gods take me wherever they take me.

The sex kitten, speaking to The Times in April.
