Denbighshire man, 20, murdered after snowball fight

The man was injured on a housing estate in Rhuddlan
Police are investigating the murder of a 20-year-old man, who was stabbed after a snowball fight in Denbighshire.

Anthony Finbar Burke was injured in the abdomen by a kitchen knife near his home in Clos-y-Berllan in Rhuddlan at around 2230 GMT on Wednesday.

North Wales Police, said he died later in Glan Clwyd hospital at Bodelwyddan.

A local man, 19, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Police want to speak to anyone who saw a group of youths in the area at the time.

Officers, who were called to reports of an argument, are carrying out house-to-house inquiries.

'Big, big shock'

It is understood Mr Burke was stabbed after a snowball fight.

North Wales Central Coroner John Hughes opened an inquest into Mr Burke's death.

He was told that Mr Burke, who lived in Clos y Berllan, had been attacked with a kitchen knife. He died later in Glan Clwyd Hospital, Bodelwyddan.

A post mortem examination by Home Office pathologist Dr Brian Rogers found he died from shock and haemorrhage from a stab wound to the abdomen.

The inquest was adjourned.

Part of Clos y Berllan was cordoned off as about half a dozen police officers carried out detailed searches in gardens close to the scene of the stabbing.

There has been a steady flow of visitors to Mr Burke's home, where it is understood he lived with his mother.

Neighbour Andy Humphreys told BBC Wales: "He was a good lad, always knocking about. It's a shame to hear what's happened. He's just a young lad, isn't he?"

Ray Patton, who lives across the street, said: "I've known him all his life. He's a 20 year old lad. He'd be 21 in June, actually. It's just a tragedy for the whole village. It's a big, big shock for a village like Rhuddlan for something like this to happen."

Any witnesses are asked to contact North Wales Police on 0845 6071001 (Welsh language), 0845 6071002 (English) or Crimestoppers Cymru Wales on 0800 555111.
