The town i live in is like a skating rink, its bad enough for me getting arond. But the elderley struggling around is beyond a joke. :(
Today was horrendous, no sign of any grit. I spoke to my stepmum about it, she reckons the council have not put any down, as even if someone slips over and they have grited, they can be sued. It is terrible and just shows you HOW POOR THIS COUNTRY IS GETTING - POOR ELDERLEY ESPICALLY. :(
Pause • Switch to Standard View Council and lack of grit and salt...

Grit you're teeth and bear it, like we did in the 40's

How come the elderly are struggling round. Surely it's easier for them if anything, they can just take a short run-up and skid everywhere. They're just moaning because they enjoy moaning imo.

larrence - the rumoured reason why they wont clear the paths is even worse.

if the council clear the paths and u subsequently fall over, then, legally, the council is liable for not doing the job properly and u can sue them.

if they dont clear the paths and u fall over, then u cant sue anybody, as its an act of god.

it also saves them a feck load of money.

it so fecking scandalous a reason that its almost definitely true.

It was in a Tesco car park..

And yes all because they are scared to clear the car park!!

Waiting at a bus stop this morning beside the entrance to a pub(Ember Inns) I was wondering why they hadn't cleared the ice from their forecourt,a not very large area.Perhaps 'wolsey end' has provided the answer, though I'm not convinced.

In my youth,in a village in Scotland prone to snow, people would clear the snow from the pavement along the length of their house.Nowadays,I live in the south east but have maintained that tradition.Does that mean that I might be sued if someone falls on my cleared area???

Wolsey End - that info is wrong mate - council's can be sued when they haven't gritted highways, as can shops etc who fail to grit their car-parks.

Google Occupiers' Liabilty Act 1957 for more info.
Report healingmylegalhealingmyheart • December 23, 2009 8:15 PM GMT
occupiers liability act 1957 relates to visitors to a premises and the occupiers related liability for any injury sustained - you'd do well to stretch the definition of premises under the Act to the streets. while the Act itself helpfully does not define 'premises', common law has created plenty of examples but again, think you will struggle to classify the average street as being subject to the Act. doesnt mean you cant get them under other legislation mind...

I am not thinking of myself m8, its the thought of seeing pensioners struggling around WHEN THE GRIT should be down SIMPLE :(
Report Ivor • December 23, 2009 8:59 PM GMT
Pensioners shouldn't have to be strugglin about - that's what family, friends and neighbours are there for.

larrence - I genuinely feel very sorry for you but you surely know that our deluded Scottish Prime Minister does not care at all (to put it politely) about the plight of his own citizens and prefers to throw away millions of pounds of our taxpayers' money at climate change sympathisers and, more worringly, aid to African dictatorships who care more about filling their boots in offshore bank accounts and duty free imported German cars than the poverty of the citizens of their own countries.

Look, in all seriousness, the amount of roads in this country, it is impossible to keep everywhere gritted all the time. The best is for main roads to be gritted.
Report larrence • December 23, 2009 9:12 PM GMT

Report Ibrahima Sonko • December 23, 2009 9:16 PM GMT
First rule of driving in frozen conditions is to stick to the main roads, they probably over salt the main roads as that is where they will get slaughtered if their is a problem.

& you lawro.

The paths look horrid, seen many old people struggling on them. You would think it would take only one guy on a scarab to clear the paths in most small towns.....
Report chatname • December 23, 2009 11:29 PM GMT
When i were a lad....

There used to be grit in the yellow bins and all the families who lived on our road would come out and chuck grit on the pavements and clear their drives and paths with spades / snow shovelers. There was a good community spirit and snowball fights etc.

Nowadays it seems as if people don't have that sense of community and think it is someone elses job to grit the paths so noone bothers and it stays icy and dangerous.

Why should they grit the path anyway? They are likely very important people in their own minds and it is not fitting for them to perform such menial tasks. If they went outside of their house or car they might experience mild discomfort for 10 mins when their body temperature drops by 1°C and they could burn off as many as 100 Calories!

It is the same with litter everyone just walks past it and leaves it there despite there being bins nearby to put it and keep the area clean and tidy.

In short people don't care much about the areas they live anymore. Bahh humbug, good night.

What I find hard to believe is the amount of old ladys I see struggling to get down the road in this weather ,where the fooook are their families ,they should be ashamed of themselfs ..
Report cooperman • December 24, 2009 11:59 AM GMT
Clearing the roads could be achieved in a couple of days, regardless of the amount of snow falling/temperatures. The solution is to spend more money, which few councils are prepared to sanction. Now if you said that the Queen or Prince Charles was visiting there wouldn't be a road within twenty f00kin miles that hadn't been cleared and gritted. Gawd bless 'er.
