Liverpool John Lennon airport closes after fresh snow falls

A DOWNFALL of snow has closed Liverpool John Lennon airport, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.

Three flights are on the tarmac waiting to be given the all clear to take off.

But they will not be able to until the apron and runway are clear of snow and ice. For the latest weather report from the Met Office, click here.

It has left around 500 passengers stranded before their Christmas getaways.

Airport bosses shut JLA at around 9.30pm after the snow started to settle.

Since then two flights due to land in Merseyside have been diverted to East Midlands International Airport, near Nottingham. They were a Ryanair flight from Murcia in Spain and an EasyJet flight from Geneva, Switzerland and each had around 150 people on board.

The flights that are yet to take off are two Ryanair jets going to Belfast City Airport and Dublin, and an EasyJet plane going to Belfast International.

Airport spokesman Robin Tudor said: "At the moment we're trying desperately to clear the runway of snow and ice.

"The snow ploughs are trying to clear the runway and once we've cleared it we've got to de-ice it.

"It's lightening up now. If it stops we can get it cleared and get it re-opened - but we're in the hands of the elements."
