celebrate the true reason for this holiday.

this short video shows newgrange in ireland.
built some 5000 years ago , its design was such to allow a shaft of sunlight to travel its length and light up the tomb twice a year at solstice.
an engineering feat which i think rivals both stonehenge and the pyramids.

An absolutely fascinating place to visit, which I did during the time I was doing my family tree. The tour is awe inspiring. How did they move those massive stones all the way from the Mountains of Mourne thousands of years ago?

that whole area is covered with similar constructions.

I did indeed. My great, great, great Grandfather was a native of Westmeath.
You can almost hear the whispers of the generations from the top of that hill.
Until someone tries to see you a wee trinket :^0

The Inca trail in peru, there are lots of similar to these, all linked with the solstice's. Did they know something we don't, back then? I hope so :)

Anybody read Ireland; The Novel by Frank Delaney. It gives an interesting fictional account of the construction.

My favourite chapter was 'Jimmy Hanley, the only man who could handle Handel.'

johnn , it is a beautiful part of the country , did you know they are trying to build a road over it?
there are many links and sites on this ,

http://www.savetara.com/

was there myself last week , pishing down and freezing , even the most determined trinket sellers couldnt be out in that.
did meet a local girl who invited us to a carol service and mulled wine :)
a chance event.

Just had the lady from the visitor centre on local radio. She said no sun this morning, but the last 2 days were brilliant. There's a public ballot to get in around solstice time.

I can't believe they want to build a road over it.

i listened to that the other week for the first time when i was down there , guy was talking about john lennons death and said so many things that id not been aware of , played a few of his songs and chatted away , then did the bingo numbers :)

Radio's Cornwall/Devon/Jersey/Guernsey combined. They did a feature on Newgrange which was recorded in the summer, and they phoned her back tonight.
