From 2002 to 2006, Thomas was married to childhood sweetheart Gemma. The couple married in St Brides Major, near Bridgend, and divorced in 2007; during the relationship, Gemma suffered three miscarriages.[10]

Having come out to Wales coach Scott Johnson and team mates Stephen Jones and Martin Williams in November 2006, in December 2009 came out in public that he is gay.[10] This was seen as a surprising move given the taboo nature of **sexuality within team sports.[1] Thomas's public confirmation of his sexuality makes him the first openly gay professional rugby player still playing the game.[11]

Can you imagine how many gayers there have been in rugby union over the years, coming, as many of them do, from public schools.

It says something about sexual discrimination in the game. Good luck to him.

I played rugby for yrs until mid 70s and never gave it a second thought, but of course gays hadn't been invented back then.
Report Get me a drink • December 19, 2009 8:06 AM GMT
All gayers were like Graham Norton in the 70's, hence easy to spot.

""Scott said: 'Right, I've got to speak now to three or four players in the Welsh team because you need the boys to surround you and support you. You can't cope with this on your own,' and he was right.

"He told two of my team-mates, Stephen Jones and Martyn Williams, and as I sat in the bar waiting for them, I was absolutely terrified, wondering what they were going to say.

"But they came in, patted me on the back and said: 'We don't care. Why didn't you tell us before?'

"Two of my best mates in rugby didn't even blink an eyelid."

But Thomas said one of his lowest points was **ing on Jemma, which drove him to the edge.

"Sometimes I felt so alone and depressed," he added.

"I used to go to the cliffs overlooking the beach near our cottage in St Brides Major and just think about jumping off and ending it all."
"

from the bbc website

pretty sad they he felt he couldnt come out earlier, and still pretty brave to do it now, like he says he doesnt no anybody else in rugby union who is gay which surely cant be true

In 2006 he came out to the Welsh backs coach, Australian Scott Johnson.

In the same year he led a players revolt which led to 2005 Grand Slam coach, Mike Ruddock leaving.

I believe ( no evidence though ) that it was a misguided attempt to get Scott Johnson the job of Welsh coach.

Scott Johnson, 2006
3 games, caretaker only
Won 0, Drew 1, Lost 2

Wales had to wait until 2008 before they won another grand slam.

I've always blamed Gareth Thomas for thet ................ and shall always hate him, not because he is gay but because of what he did to Mike Ruddock and Welsh rugby.

Rugby's a proper game. NOT for wimps. IF You get hurt the idea is you do your utmost not to show it.

The thing I CAN't understand with football is how often players act more hurt than they really are. How can
you do that and call yourself a real man.
Report speedypro • December 19, 2009 9:21 AM GMT

same with cricket speedypro. When we got hit on the thigh/glove we were told not to rub/shake it. Really grit your teeth and have a little walk.

I'd love nothing more than England to win the world cup, but I can't be fekked with all the whinging. I think being a tar.t is now ingrained in many players now, largely from the foreign influence. Now we get Englishmen doing it - Joe Cole vs Croatia was a fkin embarassment. I remember saying to someone down the pub what a c.unt cole was for play acting. He just shrugged and said "well you've got to do it these days" ffs.

from 2001........

Former Australian rugby league international John Hopoate was banned for 12 weeks Wednesday after being found guilty of "interfering" with opponents.

The Wests Tigers winger was said to have jammed his fingers up the backsides of three North Queensland players during a match last weekend. NRL judiciary commissioner Jim Hall said: "I must say in my 45 years involvement in rugby league I've never come across a more disgusting allegation than I've had to deal with now."

Hopoate denied the charges, but television replays appeared to support them. Hopoate, who is as well known for his antics off the field as his ability to score tries on it, continued his protest, saying he thought he had nothing to answer for.

"I'm a great believer in what happens on the field should stay there," he said.

But the graphic accounts of Hopoate's three victims helped condemn the giant Tongan-born winger to another lengthy suspension. "There was pressure there. I know he wasn't doing it accidentally. He was definitely pushing," said North Queensland player Paul Bowman. "I was disgusted. I couldn't believe it."

All rugby forwards are gay. All that bollock holding in the scrum gives it away. Plus the forwards tend to refer to the backs as nancy-boys or softies (a clear sign that they are trying to deflect their gayness on to others).
