Its all to do with the seasons. In Summer it will be NW and only at the equinoxes (April 22nd and December 22nd) will it set at a true Easterly direction.

I too noticed the same.

Outside the tropics the sun never sets due west.

cheers O - i guess that's a typo above? Westerly surely?

I can't grasp seasons, tilt, orbits and all that. Need to see a 3d model of it, just won't sink in!

If you have any Astronomy software you can check yourself. I can't think of an easy way to explain why.

I was thinking more that you might have meant March and September

stellarium is brilliant Reyes if you want to find out what's what in the skies at any given time of year and latitude
Report Ovalman. • December 19, 2009 3:17 PM GMT
Stellarium is an excellent free choice.

Doh!

My hangover is still kicking in :D

lol

I'm no expert Oval, but I'm pretty sure the exact times and days vary from year to year by a few hours. Rarely is it exactly at midnight.

Get a PC running Windows that can handle the graphics.

I have several installed on my system but keep going back to Stellarium. There's a few free ones on download.com.

I got a great copy of Starry Night Enthusiast from a cover disc but not sure if its downloadeable on the net.

Get your Latitude and Longitude off google maps then try this:
