As an occasional visitor I have noticed that there are far fewer forumites posting these days.

Any particular reason?

The Poker forum has suffered a marked decline in traffic compared to a year or two ago, as has Tradefair and Financials, Snooker and Politics.

Is Chit Chat destined for a similar fate?

Poker forum all too serious, Hole cards this and Flop that, actually come to think of it, blokes who have problems with a flop should be far more at home on c-c. Something to think about PM

yeah poker forum has died

mainly due to it being less popular now, bans, and people leaving betfair poker cos of the software

True Coach. :)

A few years ago I decided to learn a new word everyday. It lasted a few months before I gave up and it's amazing how many actually managed to stick in my brain.

Agree with the reasons stated regarding the demise of the Poker forum.

As for the others, my best guess would be folks are trying to stay off a gambling site as money is a bit tight at the moment.

I stopped playing because of the old software (Cryptologic). What were the issues with the new software?

It kept crashing for me; too many times to persevere with it in the end.

Annie: I play ninety-five percent of my poker in live cash games. The few times I do play online is normally spent on Stars.
Report annie. • December 15, 2009 2:44 PM GMT
I have only been playing poker for about three months, but I love it. I like the idea of live poker but wonder if I would feel comfortable being in the minority. What percentage of women play live, roughly, in your experience?
Report annie. • December 15, 2009 2:45 PM GMT
Obviously, I am not up to playing live at the moment - but one can hope!
Report Pokermonster • December 15, 2009 2:48 PM GMT
I play in two regular games Annie: an eight player table which is all male; and a twenty to thirty seater game in which two women compete.
Report Pokermonster • December 15, 2009 2:54 PM GMT
I've been playing for almost thirty years.

There was no hold 'em back then; we used to play five card draw or seven card stud (hold 'em is a version of this).

Live games will always trump online for me Annie. The best way to learn is to start small with a £10 game at your nearest casino or in the local pub leagues.
Report Pokermonster • December 15, 2009 2:58 PM GMT
I would say you will find about ten percent of the tournament poker players in casinos are women.
Report annie. • December 15, 2009 3:10 PM GMT
Thanks Pokermonster. There is a pub near me that has a £10 tourney on Monday nights, which would be perfect for me, but I have heard it is all male and that puts me off. This seems to me to be a constant in my life that whatever I like doing I find it difficult to do because I am a woman. I love horseracing, but being the only female in bookies was not much fun. Thank goodness for Betfair and atr, racing uk - although I miss the atmosphere of bookies.

Why do you prefer to play live? Do the men actually chat apart from playing, or do they keep silent? I think I worry that they would make me uncomfortable with crude remarks?

Good afternoon Pokermonster...Forumites are receiving Red card bans for the most innocous of posts since this Limited Company took over the "policing" from BF ...
There is no rhyme nor reason , as the foulest threads seem to have no problems going up , staying up and the originator able to carry on popsting okay , whilst the most innocous post receives a Red card ...
it seems they have their own agenda who goes and who stays , depending who or WHAT institution one is posting about ..
in that climate best not to post ...

Annie: I make a point of never swearing in front of women. Unfortunately, amongst poker players, this consideration is very much in the minority.

If you find coarse language offensive I am afraid most live poker games will not be for you, ma'am. Poker, although it has a few redeeming qualities, does tend to bring out the worst in people.

You're welcome Annie. :)

Some casinos run ladies' nights. Perhaps this may be the way to go?

Funnily enough I am not a lover of female company. The thought of being at a table with women talking about babies, celebrity gossip, shopping etc is not my cup of tea. The ideal would be about half and half so that I would feel comfortable and hopefully the conversation would not be crude but not stupid either. I am a real girly girl, I cry at sad movies, soppy about animals etc but I think I got an extra dose of testerone when I was born.

It would seem your best course of action might be to host a poker evening yourself, Annie; inviting like-minded people in whose company you feel comfortable?

I play in a kitchen table game with my friends. Although we play for what some may consider high stakes, the social aspect of the evening is the most importact factor for most of us.

Poker forum is full of ego's.

Try asking a question for help and your either ignored or ridiculed.

Just look at the topics on it now.

Thanks again for your advice, Pokermonster. Unfortunately the people I know have turned their nose up when I mention poker. It seems to have a bad reputation! Your situation seems perfect, I would love to play like that and have a laugh at the same time.

As to your original question I think that the nice intelligent posters have deserted the forums because of the abuse on here, the stupid fishing threads and never knowing to whom you are speaking. I usually limit my replies to posters who I think are genuine, but you can never be sure. I wish Betfair would stop people posting under multiple names and even different genders.

As Ovalman has said the poker forum is not much better. I had high hopes for it because it was poker posters on here that got me into poker and they were very nice and helpful, like Ovalman. Unfortunately, like Ovalman, I soon found out that they were not helpful at all and nasty with it.
