no matter whether you think he deserved it or not,
that was a shambles of a speech.
I have met ryan giggs many times and he is always
quietly spoken and polite but a little bland, but it
astounds me that in 20 years of playing in the sporting
spotlight thathe does not seem to have recieved any
media training.
not his fault he won but should have had something
prepared and he also omitted to thank his team mates...

ps. the `penne ryan giggs` in puccinis` is worth trying !!

Pathetic choice. Sheffield Arena full of world champions, and the nation picks Giggsy. :(

what a personality, eh?
Report madsimon • December 14, 2009 11:36 AM GMT
the word 'personality' is very confusing and I don't know why the BBc still persist with it.

ryan giggs has as much a 'personality' as freddie flintoff for instance its just a different one

Should really have had something prepared
Knew he was in with a good chance by the odds

(An opportunity to thank people close to him personally - family?
and throughout his career - did briefly mention that he 'plays for Ferguson')
Report Poppydog. • December 14, 2009 12:53 PM GMT
.....and on the other hand, it was obvious JM Olazabal had put a lot of time into his speech
for Seve and it was both glorious and touching.......and in his second language too!

In reference to l'title du thread.
Report redrich • December 14, 2009 12:58 PM GMT
maybe he is not a gambler and didn't know the odds

I thought his speech was quite good as it happens.

The fact it was impromptu makes it more meaningful than a sickly prepared effort.

He paid tribute to past winners, his manager and colleagues. What more do you want?

The fact that he is not a media wh0re who tries to shove his image down our collective throats via newspapers, OK magazine etc is probably why people like his personality and therefore they voted for him. In their thousands.

Seems to me that some people on here buy into people's PR, e.g. the 'family man' image. Interestingly those that do project this particular image - Lineker, Beckham, Woods etc - have subsequently gone on to ** on their wives and/or abandoned their young families.

Giggs is different gravy and a deserved winner and his heartfelt speech hit the right notes.
Report madsimon • December 14, 2009 1:01 PM GMT
not everyone is obsessed by 'the odds' poopydog. I genuinely think he was VERY surprised to win. Probably did not know he could even bet on himself to win it.

What was so wrong with his speech anyway . why do speeches nowadays have to turn into some emotional rollarcoaster rather than a swift 'thank you'.
Report Poppydog. • December 14, 2009 1:04 PM GMT
You maybe right

Don't get me wrong, I think he was a fair winnner
Report madsimon • December 14, 2009 1:04 PM GMT
to me the interesting thing about the reactions of those that recived awards was the extrmemes of gravitas displayed by ollie/seve and (at the other end) Bolt.

Bolt looked like he was being presented with a novelty joke on his birthday wheras seve and ollie made it out to be some sort of Nobel Peace Prize.

I thought Giggs struck the right balance between these two tbf!!
Report bix • December 14, 2009 5:20 PM GMT
The speech wasn't bad at all.The man's talent is football so why should he suddenly become an orator.
Perfectly adequate in the circumstances.
Report tobermory • December 14, 2009 5:23 PM GMT
Giggs is a great player and a decent guy ( couldn't care if he is not a public speaker myself) , though the award was a farce really.
Report redrich • December 14, 2009 5:38 PM GMT
then so was Beckhams, Zara Phillips etc
Report Pirate Army • December 14, 2009 8:52 PM GMT
Zara Philips was World Champion!!! And Beckham scored the goal that got us to the World Cup Finals.
Report Mr Eboue • December 14, 2009 8:54 PM GMT
So you give the award for scoring a free kick?
Report sibaroni • December 14, 2009 8:55 PM GMT
zara's exceptionally expensive horse was world champion, frankly.
Report Pirate Army • December 14, 2009 9:04 PM GMT
"this prestigious award will be given to the sportsman or woman whose actions have most captured the public's imagination" - from the BBC website.

Clearly Beckham's free kick justified the award based on the above criteria. Not sure about Phillips but she was World Champion, so deserved it in a sporting achievement sense.

I can't see how Giggs deserves the award on a sporting level in 2009 and also based on the above criteria.
Report redrich • December 14, 2009 9:09 PM GMT
Zara Philips was world champion in a minority sport for people that can afford to do it and can afford not to work so they have the time to get good at it.

Giggs got the award for making it in the hardest game in the world to make it in, in one of the hardest clubs to make it at, and getting a record breaking 11th league medal, a carling cup madal, a world club cup medal, appearing in a european final, and playing some of his best football in his career at the age of 35 and with a degree of humility scarsely seen in sport.

Last year was a landmark year for Giggs and the public have chosen to recognise him as their favourite sporting personality by means of an open vote.

He therefore is a rightful recipient and I say bravo Ryan!

Report Pirate Army • December 14, 2009 9:42 PM GMT
Giggs got the award for making it in the hardest game in the world to make it in, (if you are one of the best then why would it be any harder to make it in football than in any other sport?)

in one of the hardest clubs to make it at (not really relevent to SPOTY),

and getting a record breaking 11th league medal (a great achievement but one worthy of SPOTY?),

a carling cup madal, (Carling Cup??? - for goodness sake! who takes that seriously?)
a world club cup medal (where you have to have won the Champions League to enter it),
appearing in a european final (and lost - badly),
and playing some of his best football in his career at the age of 35 (as sub) and with a degree of humility scarsely seen in sport

But for a ridiculous Facebook campaign it wouldn't even have crossed the minds of the journalists, imo, to vote for him to make the shortlist.
Report redrich • December 14, 2009 9:50 PM GMT
Pirate Army - it's a popularity contest and he got the most votes. Clearly the public don't all agree with your assessment of the situation. You should have more faith in people's motives to vote for him.

You acuse me of being blinkered but your latest post suggests that you are putting your own football preferences in the way of a reasoned argument. I'd hazzard a guess that you despise Manchester United.

But you probably won't admit it!
Report Pirate Army • December 14, 2009 10:02 PM GMT
I am of the opinion that he should have got a lifetime achievement award but not SPOTY. But that has been said so many times I suppose it's getting boring to read that now. I think SPOTY has lost a lot of credibility. It takes so few votes to win it now it would seem that pockets of society, be that a region or country ( in Giggs's case both - Manchester and Wales) can manipulate the vote. It obviously didn't help with the voting numbers that there was a clash with X Factor. I would have thought that there is a decent chance that the BBC will review the voting procedure for next year to prevent another farcicle situation. I've read elsewhere that there were groans in the audience in Sheffield when Button was announced as being second which tells you a lot.
