hi i have just stripped a hallway mainly back to the plaster but there are patches of paint im guessing from when the house was originally built.i have been round with a scraper and sandpaper to take any loose stuff off.i know i can paper but it is quite a vast and fiddly area with 7 doorways fom it. is there a paint around that covers reasonably thickly to hide these patches? even if i have to go over with emulsion after.
I assume if you paint over as it is, the surface will be uneven because of the patches of previous lays of paint?
If this is the case, sand the areas of paint that you have been unable to scrape off and paint over this should provide a smooth paint finish with a couple of coats
The rest of the plasterwork may require to filling and sanding as well if the plasterwork is quite old and has paper previously applied
try it with a small area of the wall so if it doesn't work you can always cover with lining paper.

Just in case you do not know, old houses can contain lead paint which is highly toxic, especially to children. You have to remove it safely. However it was usually used on woodwork, but I have heard it can be on interior surfaces, so go carefully.
