I gave up on July the 1st, 2½ years ago on the day they banned it in public places. Must say one the best things I ever did and an achievement that might not mean much to many but to me is high on my list. My g/f and my boy are much happier now and I feel lessed than ever before.

I feel for your friend but saying yr not addicted is only kidding yourself. His poor wife must despair and I feel for the family. Good luck and I hope everything works out ok for them.

As soon as your born, your dieing but the way I see it is however you do end up going, theres no point in making it worse by smoking.

Absolutely Tevez.........I never realised just how bad you smell as well......I knew my breathe would be bad but my clothes stunk of that smell and its an awful smell......like BO and stopping that game was one of the best things I ever did. As you say.....saving £40 a week is another good reason!

you are very very clever JM

but then - my smoking m8 is a 'bit clever' as well

there will come a day when all smokers will get so s hit scared they will give up - he will soon - and the longer you put that day off the more tragic and the more difficult it will be for you.
try and do it now m8

and stop trying to be so clever about it

Is easy to call him an idiot but that glosses over the real nature of addiction. He needs to get himself to a smoking cessation educator to salvage whatever he has left of his lungs. Is a pity for him he could not have stopped before he developed that. To put yourself in his position take two or three deep breaths in and hold your breath, now try to take another breath or two and that is what breathing with that disease is like

even tho he is a m8- on principle its ridiculous that we - taxpayers- have to pay for all this

No one who reached the age of 16 without seeing someone smoke could ever be mugged into smoking a cig.

Set fire to it and breathe the smoke in?
Does it taste nice? err No,
Wilm I feel better? err No,
Then get the fookce away with thy cig proposition.

You don't subsidise smokers - they subsidise you.

For two reasons:

1) A 20 a day smoker will pay around £1,500 a year in tobacco tax. Over 50 years, that's £75,000.

2) Apart from emphysema, the smoking related diseases kill relatively quickly, thus relieving the taxpayer of the cost of lengthy NHS treatment. Also, as smokers have shorter lifespans, they are not paid a state pension for as long a time as non-smokers.

The biggest burden on society are those who never smoked and go on for ages, requiring long term intensive health care for all kinds of age related diseases, such as dementia.

1. we should tax tobacco heavily - its too d amned cheap at the moment
2. public money should not be wasted on providing medications for cessation of smoking - just stop- my dad did when he was told it was that or lose his legs- and he did so without any state funding to give up- this after 40 years puffing away
