As soon as they could not comprehend the reason for something happening.

And probably presecute on someone being a stranger.

yeah i suppose they thought they were that intelligent, that if they couldn't explain something, there must be other forces at work

Also thousands of years ago as a way of bringing disparate tribes together under one umbrella as a way to unite rather than war - rather like Europe really.

Probably people believed in god(s) as soon as they were capable of questioning natural phenomena.

As for being religious, this probably started when someone realised that if they took the role as official conduit between people and a god then they could do quite nicely out of it.

Haha, yup, believe in me and my God will make the sun rise again tomorrow.

there was a lot more of an excuse for it in the 'olden ' days given science had not provided an explanation for many things then

^ yeah I totally agree, I see religion as totally primitive, I just don't understand why it's necessary nowadays, let alone the sheer number of people who believe in something.

I wonder though if maybe now things have gone full circle - the amount of technology/media/global 'bad news' etc might make people want to believe in something a little simpler.

well there is religion and religion -i mean I fail to see how anyone can deep donw belive in the religions of the bible ,torah or koran due to them all being challenged sucessfully by science.

However modern science does not prove their is no ultimate controlling force (ie a God) and in fact many scientists believe there is a universla rule to be found which may be more of an indicator of a 'god' than not

I think that's quite different.
Greater forces that we don't yet know and understand - is a world away from a God creating an Adam ready for surgery and then sending his own look-alike 'son' born to a Virgo and allowing himself to get hung up to save sinners!

I don't think people necessarily believe in the stories from the Bible.

It's just a basic template for how one should try to lead one's life.

Roger if only that were so for all.

Religion far back in time was not at all a preposterous notion. In fact it could even be considered revolutionary thinking. Back when humans were first coming to contemplate their intelligence and sentience then there really was very few other explanations for some things, such as The Sun, volcanoes etc, than the influence of a supreme being. What is staggering is that human kind evolved amazingly quickly and developed marvels such as penicilin, jet engines etc, yet we still think like we did 10K years ago. Bizarre doesnt begin to cover it

Yes, we don't need to be equal in anyones sight anymore.

If you get on the Stock Exchange and fk up the Third World, you're clearly a better person than someone living their life with notions such as quiet dignity and duty
