MONEY TREE 11 Dec 20:51
JUST LAY GIGGS, NO HOPE OF WINNING |
By:
deserved winner imo
By:
NOT A DESERVED WINNER IN ANY SHAPE OR FORM.
JUST AS RIDICULOUS AS HIS FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR AWARD. |
By:
What exactly did he do in 2009?
Personality? They may as well have given it to his shinpads. Still, a fitting finale to this stupid, pointless programme |
By:
Only 4 footballers have won, previously - against 17 athletes. It's truly bizarre.
By:
Won a record breaking 11th leage medal??? Anyone???
By:
in ONE year? impressive.
By:
Yes he won his eleventh league medal in one year
[confused smiley] |
By:
So...a league medal...no more impressive...well actually less impressive than his team-mates who played more games.
He's a nice guy, and an all-time great, but the biggest personality or performer this year...no chance. |
By:
It's a democracy - the man won!
Clearly IS the best sporting personality of the year weighed in weighed in etc :-) |
By:
Have borrowed this off football forum
ACHIEVEMENTS IN LAST YEAR 1)carling cup winner 2)premier league winner 3)champions league runner up 4)world club cup winner 5)players player of the year all at the age of 35 ,after 18 yrs of consistent form. |
By:
Yet again, the last part is irrelevant. To paraphrase John Lennon, I'm not even sure he's the best player at Man Utd.
By:
All people over the age of 20 who voted for this man should be shot imo, idiocy
By:
Giggs will be truly embarrassed by all this.
The man has been one of the best footballers this country has produced and he doesn't deserved to be treated like some senile old woman, with everyone patting him on the head and telling him how good he used to be, whilst giving him undeserved awards. All this $hite undermines not only the awards but the Giggs own achievements. He was far too good to have to rely on sympathy recognition to sum up his career |
By:
Well said.
By:
Scholesy must be value for next years award
By:
as i said on another thread. Redgrave didn't win spoty for his first, second, third or forth golds.
He did for his fifth - that was a lifetime achievement award - we won 11 gold medals that year, why was he put ahead of everyone? |
By:
He was pfa player of the year too wasn't he.
My personal choice was still jenson or ennis, or even strauss or haye. |
By:
Because the public have sympathy and empathy for long-lasting sportsmen?
By:
Won't be Scholesy - it's not a Man Utd thing, it's a worn out Welshman thing. The smart money for next year is on Robbie Savage for an outstanding career of haircuts.
By:
sure I spotted Statto in the audience.
By:
Couldn't it be said that Redgrave was instrumental in winning all 5 of those golds. I doubt Man U would have achieved any less without Giggsy in the last 12 months.
By:
Someone posted on the soccerball forum that 14 Utd players played more games than Giggs last season!!!
By:
not necessarily sticking up for him, i find it all v.strange.....
but football is the biggest sport in the world. he was player of the year in one of the biggest, if not the biggest, leagues in the world. he won the league title, league cup and was r/up in euro cup. and i haven't mentioned all his past achievements which is clearly the reason why he won it in a similar way to steve redgrave in 2000 |
By:
I agree, that's part of why he won it (although I'd argue Redgrave's achievement was greater). Is there a lifetime achievement award?
By:
Did Giggs win ?
By:
i sent you an email lozzy.
Redgrave was part of a team in all his golds. i'm no rowing expert, but i'm sure people were saying pinsent was the best in that boat of 4 in 2000. Redgrave was just another member of the 4 man crew that won a gold (one gold of 11 won by GB that year). Giggs was voted the best player (of say 300+ players) in one of the best leagues in the most competitive sport in the world. Having said all that, there is no precedent whatsoever for a football player winning spoty on the basis of club form. Don't think they did a lifetime achievement award this year, was bobby charlton last year and bobby robson the year before, and a few others before. |

I missed the programme tonight but caught up with the result on Ceefax.
I'm amazed Giggs won. Rob, on BBC news they reported Seve won the Lifetime Achievement award. |
By:
oh i will check that tommy. I thought he won a special achievement award. I'm sure he already has a lifetime achievement award
By:
Ah, maybe I'm wrong then, Rob, but that's what I thought I heard them say.
By:
No you'r right Tommy.
He has won a lifetime achievement award twice ffs. just checked on wiki. he won it in 1997 too. Surely you can't win a lifetime award twice!!!! That's why i thought his award tonight had a different title. |

Ceefax RIP

I don't like SPOTY it's a god damn popularity contest
By:
in reality it's supposed to be a popularity contest, but they make it an achievement based contest
By:
I stopped watching it in '09, have I missed anything?
