Anyone given it a thought?

I recently visited my dad's and as he's houseband we got a barrel in (9 gallon - 72 pints).

Worked out just over a quid a pint and all the gear came with it and was set up for us.

The only downside is you have to shift it in about 5 days or the beer starts to turn.

If you are having a few round consider it and support your local micro-brewery most will be only too happy to help.

I used Brass Monkey in Sowerby Bridge an excellent service - and their Mandrill Bitter is a nice pint.

Less than a tenner for 40 pints of home brew. Have to buy a plastic barrel, a big tubfor mixing and a tube for syphoning. And there's nothing wrong with it, tastes fine.

Good fun but biggest problem is locating it somewhere with correct temp.(approx 52-55f). Beer should be consumed within three days, ideally, but stronger gravity may last five. Make sure you hard peg the barrel when not in use as it's the air entering the cask that speeds the decline in quality.

Brass Monkey supplied mine with a cooler unit, and set the barrel up - pegged etc.

some outdoors (off licences) have casks of real ale in and you can buy a good few pints to take home with you and the containers on site. Lasts a few days.

But think of the price - from the brewery direct it's just over a pound a pint.
