I always used to use epsons, cheap ink as head not on cartridge, but you need to use them regularly to keep from clogging. Excellent print quality for price, doubt you'll find better.

I had an Epson about 3 years ago - C48, C60, etc. They were vg - you could get a year out of them. But now it's all-in-ones with extortionate ink. My last Epson was dire and I took it back to Argos. The Canon Pixma is working out about £5 per a4 colour sheet. Unreal. Don't know if they're re-fillable using ink kits or compatible cartridges.
The last compatibles I bought shut down the Epson altogether.

Epson have started putting a chip on their printers which eventually cuts the Printer off if you are using cheap compatible cartridges. They then ask you to check with your Epson dealer to arrange a service shich costs about £50. All a con to get the money they lost on the ink sales. You can buy a disc from Ebay which will reset the printer and save you money on a Service or buying a new printer.

Epson R240 is quite good and doesn`t seem to cut out if one uses compatibles. One can get cartridges for them on Ebay at 50p each.
Samsung CLP-300 is a terrific bargain for a colour Laser printer at approximately £120. Toner can be bought quite cheap from China and it has quite a good quantity output. Fast, reliable and sharp print, but, not very good for printing photographs though.

can't you get an ink-less printer nowadays ? I just ordered one of those Polaroid Pogo printers (which is for printing mobile phone pics mainly), but the technology is there so you'd think there must be a larger version for PCs etc

Sainsbury's are doing a black ink refill kit for £5. Enough ink for 'up to 9' refills. I've got a pack and am going to try it out with my Canon cartridges. They've gone up from £7 to £10, recently, and are tiny. I get just over 100 sheets from one.
