the nuts can't be farmed I remember hearing about, the trees only produce nuts in natural surroundings.

Was it not the fact there was some mould/or fungi on the shells?

I used to drink in a pub in Bristol that had bare wooden floors. Next to the bar was a barrel of monkey nuts in their shells, free to eat. A big sign encouraged everyone to throw the shells on the floor to polish it.

The pub was called "The Naval Volunteer", good real ale and live sunday music, until they refurbished it. Now it's empty.
