Was thinking of moving there once. Decided against it as it was way too quiet.
Report NOT TOO FAR • December 7, 2009 1:15 PM GMT
Favershams not too far from my dad, we go there sometimes.there's a nice relaxing place on the way to canterbury( from faversham) called Wickembreaux, thats a nice quiet relaxing place.
Report blackburn1 • December 7, 2009 2:05 PM GMT
Wickhambreaux is the other side of Canterbury, lovely pub called The Rose. Faversham is an odd place, very quiet and old fashioned but full of pikeys. Might struggle to fill a weekend but some of the villages around are lovely.
Report NOT TOO FAR • December 7, 2009 2:08 PM GMT
Correct Blackburn. Fordwich is the very small quiet village on the way to Canterbury, Herne Bay (where my dad lives )is a lot better now than it use to be, better in the summer than now TBH.
Report blackburn1 • December 7, 2009 2:16 PM GMT
Actually NTF Fordwich is on the way to Margate from C'Bury, sorry to be pedantic! The Fordwich Arms is very nice too.

Not sure about Herne Bay, its never really taken off in the way Whitstable has recently.
Report Joe Jordan • December 7, 2009 2:18 PM GMT
The Clamparts (Jed + Elly May , etc ) thought Faversham was a greeting and used to say
"Faversham Mr Drysdale " :D
Report Joe Jordan • December 7, 2009 2:45 PM GMT
this was in the bit were they all visited England btw ...
Report NOT TOO FAR • December 7, 2009 4:14 PM GMT
Blackburn, all depends on whether you go straight up the hill or turn right after you go through the level crossing at sturry ..LOL..
Report NOT TOO FAR • December 7, 2009 4:16 PM GMT
Agree that The Fordwich arms is a nice pub ,sat outside there having a meal many times by the river, on the way back from Folkestone races in the summer...
Report HH Sultan Vinegar • December 7, 2009 4:19 PM GMT
Used to live in Westbere nr. Canterbury for a while so know Fordwich Arms well.

Yep - my findings precisely.

Herne Bay absolute chav heaven. Stay away imo
Report lmfao • December 7, 2009 4:27 PM GMT
Faversham is old and parts are good- houses are interesting - some built on the continental/ flemish style - 300+ years old - in the quay every chance of seeing the odd thames barge- pre-book a brewery tour for an hour if thats your thing- Shepherd Neame- you'll learn a bit of the town's history - close by - Whitstable is worth a visit - park outside town and stroll in - hit the beach and walk past Peter Cushings house- the neptune pub on the beach is unfussy - cr ap for beer but good vibes and music (imo) - a few pubs and fish restaurants 100 yards further down the beach- keep going for 200 yds more and your in the working harbour- -on high street coffee shops/ cafes - some quirky places for lunch - clothes boutiques -delicattessens- best beer is at The Ship Centurian on the High street- run by a mad german - Armin - who swears like a trooper - try one of his famous chillied pickle eggs- called Armins A rse Rippers -heading back to Faversham theres a gastro pub- the sportsman at Seasalter - expensive - fancy and not big servings but class food
Report HH Sultan Vinegar • December 7, 2009 4:28 PM GMT
btw speaking of Wickhambreaux - is where James Bond comes from in the original books.
Report blackburn1 • December 8, 2009 11:35 AM GMT
Are you sure about that? Fleming had a place at St Margarets Bay. A lot of the books refer to East Kent, thats for sure.
Report Huckerson • December 8, 2009 11:59 AM GMT
That's why he was called 007, that was the local bus route.
Report NOT TOO FAR • December 8, 2009 12:12 PM GMT
my mates got a cottage at st margarets bay, lots of muggings and murders and robberies, thousands of asylum seekers living in shop doorways...
Report blackburn1 • December 8, 2009 12:18 PM GMT
You must have a different St Margarets Bay, its a lovely village
Report Huckerson • December 8, 2009 1:13 PM GMT
Is that how you go about seeking asylum? Seems odd.
Report NOT TOO FAR • December 8, 2009 2:30 PM GMT
Only joking Blackburn, my mate reads this forum and doesn't know my username, he rang me just now and told me what someone wrote about st margarets ., TBH i forgot all about it..lol...It is a lovely place..
Report blackburn1 • December 8, 2009 2:34 PM GMT
NTF I guess he knows your username now! Tell him you'll buy him a beer at the Coastguard to cheer him up.
Report HH Sultan Vinegar • December 8, 2009 4:53 PM GMT
phew I live in St Margarets. Wondered what was going on there for a moment! It's lovely - and it's a four pub village. :)
Report treble • December 8, 2009 4:59 PM GMT
Is it near Dover?
Report HH Sultan Vinegar • December 8, 2009 5:02 PM GMT
yes treble - halfway between Dover and Deal.
Report treble • December 8, 2009 5:04 PM GMT
Any sea fishing there?
Report HH Sultan Vinegar • December 8, 2009 5:08 PM GMT
it's not bad but Deal beach and pier - and the Admiralty pier and the breakwater in Dover are better. Mainly flatties off the beach but the odd good bass also.
Report NOT TOO FAR • December 8, 2009 9:22 PM GMT
Blackburn , i prefer The smugglers, low ceiling but nice and cosy, as for Deal , saw a blue plaque on the wall outside a house stating that Charles Hawtrey lived here.
Report blackburn1 • December 9, 2009 7:21 AM GMT
NTF Hawtry lived in Middle Street I know exactly where the house is. The Smugglers is ok, the food at the White Cliffs Hotel, formerly the Cliffe Tavern is great. The Coastguard a bit touristy for me

Lovely unspoilt part of the world
Report blackburn1 • December 9, 2009 7:22 AM GMT
Its a very short price sultan and I know each other btw
Report dambuster • December 9, 2009 12:45 PM GMT
I remember seeing Charles Hawtrey in a pub at Reculver (near Herne bay) with his wife (i think)the actress Queenie Watts..
Report NOT TOO FAR • December 9, 2009 12:54 PM GMT
DAmbuster, If your familiar with Reculver ..then it suits your username...
Report blackburn1 • December 9, 2009 1:12 PM GMT
Errr, Charles Hawtry wouldn't have had a wife
Report NOT TOO FAR • December 9, 2009 1:39 PM GMT
I can't imagine Charles Hawtrey being married to Queenie Watts somehow...lol
Report HH Sultan Vinegar • December 9, 2009 2:47 PM GMT
Hawtrey's one time local was the Ship. Used to like popping in there occassionally, as it had Fullers USB on draught.

Let me take yo back dear reader to 1961 and our caravan near Faversham at Graveney.

"Theme For A Summer Place" was at Number 1 and it really was like "Darling Buds Of May" and we had FREEDOM...

No cash cows/No clampers, we could park anywhere and Yes! we DID leave our caravans unlocked....Woman made toffee apples all day...this is when England really was England...if you, cough-cough, get my meaning....:)
Report HH Sultan Vinegar • December 9, 2009 3:18 PM GMT

Report blackburn1 • December 10, 2009 10:25 AM GMT

Report HH Sultan Vinegar • December 10, 2009 11:22 AM GMT
