Country heavily in debt, too many do gooders, no discipline in society, justice system favours criminals rather than victims, bankers pay, politicians only interested in their own skins, high price of fuel, etc etc. I love this country, but its absolutely f*cked - anyone agree or is it just me?

I'm happy with having a job, reasonable if modest lifestyle, food, warmth and a roof over my head. I've had a good education, I will be looked after in old age and if I'm ill in the meantime I've got the NHS to look after me.

You might sl ag it off but you don't seem to realise how lucky we are here.

To be fair, I live on the edge of London and even at 55 years old, I return to the heart of this great City every week.
I would no longer be happy living in the heart of London as I would be an English minority in half the areas now but its still one of the 2 most stimulating and vibrant cities in the World and the choice is endless for most things.

Maybe a slightly more atomised, individualistic society is the price we pay for decades of societal and technological improvement. If it is then so be it. Ultimately stop paying so much attention to occasional stories of horror from whatever scaremongering newspaper you read. We have far better and easier lives than our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents did, people will sadly always be nostalgic for some better imagined past.

Compared to what it used to be like when?

I'm sure in 1950 people born in 1900 probably thought things had been better in 1920. Of course people are going to hark back to the past being a better place, they were younger for example then, probably not tied down, with their lives ahead of them.

I agree with your point about the media, Hoss. They have a lot to answer for.
But I'm not convinced that there is less abuse now. It just didn't get reported as much back then.
Plus the technology of today puts our kids (and everyone) at more risk than before.

People have always gone on about 'things not being like they used to be.' Annoyingly I can't remember his name, but there was some late 18th century essayist who constantly harked back to the 'good old days' of the mid 18th century.

People will always say it. Other people will then say that people have always said it in the past too. Then the first lot will say 'but this time everything really has gone to the dogs' and so on and so forth.

Anyway, I for one am pleased the country ain't what it used to be, because if I want a bet I can do it from the comfort of my own home, then watch the race (almost) live, as opposed to have to go into a gloomy, smoke-filled bookies and try to listen to a cr*p commentary over the din of some moron shouting 'come on ya fecker' incessantly throughout the four minutes of the race.

70s and 80s also saw mass unemployment, massive industrial unrest, football hooliganism, overt racism and **phobia on a scale we don't have today. And you had betting tax.

I guess most people on here are in their 30s and 40s so the 1970s and 80s probably look a bit better in people of that age group's perspective. People probably don't think of those things I've listed above so much as teenagers and perhaps gloss over things a bit.

I'm not trying to be deliberately antagonistic but I'm just saying things aren't so black and white.

Agree with you though Platini on being able to play in the street. My dad always goes on about how there were less cars, more playing fields when he was younger (he's 52).

Great Britain can not Fuel itself, feed itself and
The report points out that 25 million people in England and Wales are already living in areas where there is less water available per person than in Spain or Morocco.
One of the worst affected areas is south-east England, which has some of the driest weather and a dense population.
All homes built since 1990 are fitted with water meters,It is estimated about a third of properties have them.
Thames Water Operating profit for the six months ended 30 September 2009 up 2.7% to £331.8 Million, compared to the same period in 2008.
Pre-tax profit was £225.5 Million
In 2008 £610 Million profit was made compared to £590 Million in 2007
Water companies are predicting pre-tax profits in excess of £2 Billion, it might be a bitter pill for the public to swallow.

The Environment Agency wants "near universal" water metering in England and Wales to help protect supplies, claiming that metered households use 10-15% less water.

In response to the report published on Tuesday, an agency spokesman said: "Widespread water metering implemented by water companies, including safeguards to protect vulnerable groups, would provide a fairer charging system and is vital to help reduce water consumption and avert future severe shortages."

"Water resources are already under pressure in many parts of England, with some 25 million people living in areas where there is less water available water per person than Spain or Morocco."
