Don't the bankers normally pay tax on bonuses?

If yes, then 50% would represent just an extra 10% because on normal occasion they would pay 40% tax on bonus.

So it's really 10% tax extra.

I'm wrong?

You are wrong (as I understand it).

They want to put a 50% tax on the bonus funds in the first place. Then the bankers get paid their bonus. Which will be taxed as normal income is.

The tax would raise less than 0.01% of the current UK budget deficit and is electioneering pure and simple.

Gotcha!

That makes sense.

most will be payed by other means, or deffered until after the election anyway.

The bit that gets me is the counter argument that without bonuses these people would leave. Leave to go where exactly? To another bank that is also not paying bonuses? To another bank that is also now state owned? Abroad to another bank neck deep in sh it? The cold hard reality is that 90%+ of people cannot and will not upsticks and leave the country with there family and leave behind everyone they know to go to a foreign country and start from scratch. If it was that simple then they would have already done it.

Being missed is the IMPACT of BIG bonuses on their Pensions !!

Many schemes let one take the beat 3 years out of your last 10 to calculate your "Final Salary" on which your Pension is based ..

A £5 million Bonus counts as pay ...so anyone within 10 years of retiring gets a nice Double Whammy !!
A bonus + counting towards your Pension for as long as you live in retrirement !!... Nice if you can get it !!...

all celebrities claim they'll leave their country when things don't go their way, does it make a difference? no, they think they are far bigger than they are

appears same it happening for the bankers..."oooh! are you going to leave the country? good on ya!", like that'll make a difference?

hate it when people think they are bigger than the country, quite an embarrassment actually

Jim Hensen, I think we're supposed to be with the illusion that every other Western Country is just doing fine except for the United Kingdom

I have worked in tax for more than 20 years, and this is going to be ludicrously easy to avoid. It will raise a pittance, and very likely to cost more to collect than it raises.
