Nothing to it, really. Got mine out about 10 years ago. Keyhole surgery. Pain's quite tolerable. They'll ask you straight after if you need a painkiller (morphine). I didn't bother.

Yes. No diet restrictions after. Although you'd think you'd need to cut down on fat, since the gall bladder secretes fat digesting enzymes. But wasn't given any advice on that. I keep my fat intake low anyhow, as I'm a bit of a health nut.

what are the main symptons of gallstones? the ones i read on the net seem to cover a lot of things.

Symptoms of gallstones
Gallstones are very common. Most cause no symptoms at all and you may not even be aware you have them. Gallstones that don't cause any symptoms usually don't need any treatment.

Gallstones can irritate the lining of your gallbladder and they can get stuck in your bile duct causing an attack of abdominal (tummy) pain that:

develops quickly
is severe
lasts about one to three hours before fading gradually
isn't helped by over-the-counter painkillers
Other symptoms of gallstones may include:

feeling sick or vomiting
sweating
restlessness
jaundice (yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes)

usually get irritated first, then pain in right kidney and then a pain as thoughsomeones blown a long party balloon up n me. usually pain not last that long as wur says 1-3 hours, last ne i had was about 12 hours or so, hence admitting myslef to hospital. did not feel well .

a mate of mine goes in hospital next month to have his removed, most likely will be keyhole surgery
so expecting only a very short stay in hospital. He was in hospital for a couple of weeks recently
after waking up with chronic stomach pains, done several very unpleasant tests and things
was in a pretty bad way. And was told having his gallbladder out would be nothing to what
he has already been through - especially if they do it with keyhole surgery.

Wife had it done through key hole surgery. Hurt like f*ck for days after, and she knows what real pain is after several broken limbs, dislocated joints, laser eye surgery and of course the gall stone attacks.

She went home the same day after operation, but really she still have been there overnight. She couldn't move or anything without screaming in pain, and that was with massive doses of codeine, ibroprofen and paracetemol.

Strangely, she also developed a wheat and gluten allergy after having it removed, but can now have cheese etc without being awake all night in pain.

About 8 years ago i was getting severe stomach pains around every 3 months and put it down to something i ate , one night it was so bad my wife took me to hospital , they kept me in for a few days nil by mouth it turned out i had pancreasitis , a few weeks later i had my gall bladder out key hole surgery , checked in hospital 8am they gave me anesthetic , took it out and i was up in bed at 12 having a sandwich , overnight stay home next morning , i've never had a problem since , i eat everything very varied diet , don't know how i got it in the first place because i eat healthy , am the correct weight and don't drink much.

I had mine done when i was 22, and im female so it was a really rare case. I had had the attacks for 5 years and because of my age no one even thought to check for gallstones, it wasnt until i went privately that i got the correct diagnosis.

I was booked in to have the procedure privately, but a week before the op i was rushed to a&e as i colud no longer take the pain. It turned out that my gallbladder was so inflamed that it was stuck to my liver (i think it was my liver) and they couldnt remove it until the reduced inflammation.

I was nil by mouth for 48 hrs and pumped with antibiotics and then they removed it through key hole. It usually takes about 90 mins, mine took about 5 hrs, and it exploded as the removed it so i did have some "gravel" left in for a while.

However, once i came around i was home the next dsy, it was a little bit uncomfortable to move around but i have never felt anything close to the pain of the attacks.

I eat whatever i want. Its been 4 years since the op and ive never had anything clsoe to that pain since.

Had the key hole surgery after a terrible time with colic from a gallstone blocking the bile duct.

Op went well but was very sick after ( happens if the bile leaks into stomach).

Recovery OK - medium pain on movement and brusing but no worse than a hernia repair for example. Do take the painkillers except morphine (nap) for a few days.

Felt fairly normal after a week and fully better after 2/3 weeks.

Eating all fine now ( cheese - curries etc) but you do need to eat regularly each day, as if you dont the bile from the liver continues to flow and goes straight through with nothing to bind to!

cheers everyone, thanks for taking the time. my bro in laws wife gallbladder fused to liver, she was in a bad way, think the surgeon cut the liver during the op . I've had a scan and seens pretty straightforward. just looking forward to eating normally soon ( or having the choice to ) just fed up of looking down restaurant/bar menus and thinking cant have about 90% of it ( well i can but im chancing a lot of pain ) .

MM -- good luck with this mate. My wife had hers removed 6 weeks ago & it's made her much more comfortable, and allowed her to go back to eating and drinking what she wants.

She's now got the hang of not allowing dodgy organs in her & I'm now sleeping in the spare room! ;)

PS have you heard The Duke & The King album? Had some really good reviews.

You don't digest fats as well, so apparently your crap is a lot softer if you have a fatty meal the night before.

On the plus side, you won't gain weight as easy as the body absorbs less fat, and wife said she now feels 'human' again after 6 months of feeling like she was close to death!
