Depends what you are looking to spend. If you are looking for a budget turntable, pro-ject turntables are supposed to be good.

car boot sales/table top sales are the places to find these as everyone is dumping them for the ipod find sony are good you would pick one up for about a tenner

All depends on money. Around £200 something from Project is probably best value.

Michell make beautiful decks, but they cost good money. I've got a gyrodec, and if you ever get that obsessed I can recommend it. Will last you a lifetime, and sound lovely with it. Classic British engineering.

One good tip is that if you can find a second hand Technics 1210 in VERY GOOD condition, it will be fantastic value. The arm is not so good, you can get kit to fit a Rega 250 which will transform it.

Then you get into phono stages, and it never ends....

But Graham Slee is the man here if you are serious.
