Your entering the realms of fantasy now jones.

I agree with the opening poster .
I know it was a popular show but like all the shows written by Perry & Croft i thought it was a pile of cack .
Report positively4thsteet December 6, 2009 7:20 PM GMT
Some great characters and great actors imo.

When they relied on jonesy falling in a river or getting a chimney between the legs thn they let themselves down imo.

Mainwaring, Fraser and Wilson are 3 of the all time great characters (superbly acted too) Godfrey and Walker brilliant too.

Jones was great, but sometimes, as stated above, the writing let him down imo.

Pikey and the ARP warden slightly hammed up a little imo.

In summary a great programme imo

Fantastic character based clean comedy with running gags. If you can't appreciate it, go and jerk off to overrated shoite like The Office and The Royle Family.

Apart from dads army the rest are classics, specially garnett i have all 47 i think it is now of in sickness and in health.Dads army wasn't funny to me anyway.

I like most of the older comedies but Last Of The Summer Wine has too many bathtubs on wheels for my taste.
Report positively4thsteet December 6, 2009 7:46 PM GMT
i've always put dad's army well above other perry and croft stuff. In fact the best thing about the show wasn't the scriptwriting, but the acting and characters.
Report positively4thsteet December 6, 2009 7:47 PM GMT
I loved In sickness and in health , used to watch it when i was a kid. only seen tildeath us do part on youtube, or the odd clip on some compilation programme.

Really thought alf garnett was funny as.

i wish it i could get all til death us do part,my bro has some old ones on video thatw ill never be shown again. And just to think the BBC banned a lot of episodes of til death is do part. But when garnett made in Sickness and in health you can get every episode ever made,i have the lot,its brilliant.Just a shame about til death us do part,as i am am huge fan of alf garnett

As somebody on the page posted, the PC BBC would crap themselves with a script like this today.

I think dad's army was a very british sitcom - there weren't that many great jokes, but the quality of the acting, the empathy of the characters and the originality of the plots more than compensated for it. True, it may not raise that many laughs when watched today, because we've already heard the jokes - but they told them first.
Report a bitofinterest December 7, 2009 12:06 AM GMT
it actually was and still is marvellous
Report bodil December 7, 2009 12:09 AM GMT
Wonderful character actors with private lives full of snakes, sh*te, abortions and vampire squids. It's the sub-text, moron!

And their stage-craft - often apprently unsubtle - was, nonetheless, excellent.
Report charwell. December 7, 2009 4:54 PM GMT
Don't tell him Pike!

A truly wonderful, timeless comedy which never had to revert to smut to get a laugh.

Now look here opening poster, and get back in line!

Cant believe that normally sane people are calling Dads Army a one joke comedy.
A comedy with class struggles, great acting, perfect timing and a half decent script.
As has been said earlier, BBC would be repeating it every other day on BBC 4 if it was a new comedy.

When I was a youngster I wasn't the greatest fan of Dad's Army.  As I've got older and wiser I've appreciated it a lot more and now regard it as a timeless classic.  It's a fine wine not a cheap lager.  If you watch it expecting a cheap lager you'll be disappointed.
Report kenny mann October 8, 2014 7:30 PM BST
Agree completely. Only watched it if it happened to be on and thought it was rather stupid.  Very funny now.
