Marillion really polarise opinion amongst fans who either prefer the Fish or Hogarth era. I'm in the former camp but also like some of their later stuff.

Thin Lizzy. In the shadow of other 70's/80's bands when they don't deserve to be. Had a massive impact on Iron Maiden for example, who themselves are very influential.

Very few can boast the versatility and back catalogue of them but they are always forgot about.
Report Curryisforlife • December 6, 2009 11:53 AM GMT
Agree with Squeeze redbag. Went to see them at the Liverpool pops about 3 months ago, superb. Pretenders on the same bill, they're brilliant live, almost like listening to the recorded songs.
Off to see UB40 tonight @ the Echo arena. Eddy Grant supporting, not really looking forward to Eddy but who knows, might be pleasantly surprised.
Report HRH The Lager Khan • December 6, 2009 11:54 AM GMT
Phil - agree in part. I was speaking recently to a friend who is a pub/club musician and he said in Ireland Lynott is rightly still very fondly remembered and they still have the get-together with John Sykes and other former band memebers each year to remember him.

Porcupine Tree.

When you have released the amount of albums they have that have won all sorts of awards from the music industry and sell out wherever they go and still 99% of the music listening population hasnt even HEARD of them let alone heard anything BY them, i find that amazing.
Report Phil Lynott • December 6, 2009 12:02 PM GMT
Yep true HRH, in Ireland they are legendary which is understandable. Maybe because I'm from N.Ireland I still feel an emotional attachment as they do have some roots from here and as a result I overrate them, it's possibly that or maybe they are a band who people like rather than love.

I remember when I first went to University, I wanted a girl who loved Nine below Zero. She never shut up about them. I claimed to like "Three Times Enough", and still didn't get anything from her. She has now married an amateur jockey. True story.

Report Miami2017 • December 6, 2009 2:23 PM GMT
If we're including solo artists too, Billy Joel is acres ahead of Elton John, and other contemporaries who get more coverage than he does.
Report Curryisforlife • December 6, 2009 2:32 PM GMT
Elton John is a typical 'I'm so good/big now, I no longer have to try' and consequently is sh!te now.

Poogirl, I wouldn't say I hate them, just not my scene really.

Been trying to think of people who I like who don't get the credit they deserve. For me its The Faces. Nobody really looks back to them, but I think they were something special. The BBC live sets that they did, top drawer. On youtube.

john otway and wild willy barrett

Tony - you may have a point there, it's just whenever I mention them on here I usually get a 'who?' or 'not as good as the stones, the beatles, the who, flippin' bob dylan' etc! Some other bands that I think are exceptional & never get/got the credit they deserve are Stump, The Toy Dolls (amazing lyricists & players), Pop Will Eat Itself & Cabaret Voltaire. It's a good thread this, but I think ELO and Squeeze have had more than their fair share of plaudits. I do have records/CDs of both in my collection as it goes!

CJ - I bought a couple of their albums on your recommendation. Good stuff, although I stick with my original assertion that they remind me of the Tindersticks!

In that case Alex, i'll follow your recommendation and dig out the T sticks !
