I reckon you had it right first time but the second and third are pretty inseperable:

The Smiths

Happy Mondays
The Charlatans

Oasis
Roses

imo

The Smiths - utterly unique, dozens of great songs
Stone Roses - one great album
Oasis - completely derivative
Report snooker backer • December 4, 2009 6:29 PM GMT
Good point angryfire, silly me. Just above the Roses but probably below Oasis.
Report angryfire • December 4, 2009 6:44 PM GMT
Seen the inspirals 5 times, Mondays 3, Oasis and Smiths and Roses...never....wish id seen the Smiths and Roses too.....one of my only regrets in life that money cant buy for me.

The Smiths
Oasis
Report snooker backer • December 4, 2009 6:49 PM GMT
Well I saw the Smiths once, Mondays once (on form for once, at the Hacienda), Oasis twice and The Charlatans last year, still a class act. Just think in terms of the way music changes things there is little to rival the Smiths, to me the Mondays were the 80's/90's equivalent to the Sex Pistols but the Smiths were like nobody before. The Roses and Oasis were always imo standing on the shoulders of giants.
Report snooker backer • December 4, 2009 6:51 PM GMT
Saw the carpets once in Gloucester but I was a bit p1ssed, EMF were there too so a bad night was had by all. Good studio band though, love Saturn 5 and Caravan.
Report snooker backer • December 4, 2009 6:53 PM GMT
I did see the La's at their peak too. Awesome, but dated I suppose. i
Report angryfire • December 4, 2009 6:57 PM GMT
Saturn 5 and Caravan, yeah. Loved everything they did...Clint and Tom..heroes to me...Only saw Mr Ryder when he was whacked.....and in those days, I just thought it was the red stripe he was holding.....how little did I know.

Oasis

Very easy decision
Report Alex69 • December 4, 2009 7:08 PM GMT
1. Smiths (genius vocals, lyrics & guitar riffs, split up at just the right time)
2. Stone Roses (fantastic, creative, debut album, but burnt out too quickly)
3. Oasis (good, but ultimately nothing more than Beatles copyists with attitude)
Report angryfire • December 4, 2009 7:09 PM GMT
Im with Alex ^
Report snooker backer • December 4, 2009 7:12 PM GMT
so angryfire, question back, if you put the carpets, the mondays and the charlatans in there what would your order be?
Report cliff • December 4, 2009 7:13 PM GMT
I don't know the inspiral carpets much but of the 5, i'd go:-

Smiths
Roses

Charlatans

Mondays
Oasis
Report angryfire • December 4, 2009 7:22 PM GMT
Well I would be like this:

The Smiths
Inspiral Carpets
The Stone Roses
Happy Mondays
The Charlatans
Oasis

I think the Smiths have to win cos they were the most prefectly timed band ever......they were needed....and still stand up today. They will go down in history, the others (some of em) will just be remembered.
Report snooker backer • December 4, 2009 7:28 PM GMT
Agree with the top choice and yoursummary obviously. Mozza continues to be supreme live. But please please please listen to Pills Chills and Bellyaches again and again and again before you demote the Mondays so easily.

:)
Report cliff • December 4, 2009 7:29 PM GMT
Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches, not Chills!

smiths by a mile

stone roses- fine debut album.

dont regard oasis as of any musical significance whatsover. rutles tribute band.
Report angryfire • December 4, 2009 9:21 PM GMT
Im not a massive Oasis fan, in fact, not much at all....I loved the single Rock and Roll Star.....and Supersonic.....but once they started with Some might say, it was all starting to get a bit "status quo" for me.
Report Alex69 • December 4, 2009 9:24 PM GMT
Angry - who are your top few bands of all time, mate, out of interest?
Report angryfire • December 4, 2009 9:34 PM GMT
It would be a little shameful if im honest.

Its so varied......

Icant do an order but here are a few I like:

Faithless
Everything but the girl
Jethro Tull (Yes, really!)
Air
New Order
Joy Division
Cud
Nirvana
Elbow
Prodigy
To be honest, I could go on with 70s, 80s and 90s.......Theres just too many. Everything but the girl were doing stuff same time as The Smiths and imo, some of it genius. Others would say "plain pop" but I rate em.
Report dlarssonf • December 4, 2009 9:44 PM GMT
smiths, then oasis sometimes, never liked the stone roses
Report Journeyman • December 4, 2009 9:44 PM GMT
1.The Smiths
2 .Ian Brown's superior solo stuff
3. Nobody
