there are videos on youtube where he seems quite at home in the audience and even allows them up on stage in spite of the dangers etc..his brother is even more extrovert

Not a fan but it would have to be Freddy Mercury - totally stole the show at Live Aid when put up against some of the (then) greatest performenrs on the planet.
At a much less exposed level, anyone who has seen Henry Rollins lead Black Flag or his own band, has witnessed someone with stage presence by the bucketload.

tony ive seen them twice and they were amazing, i think the whole band in general has just such a big presence about them when performing coz they really go for it

I saw henry rollins in person last year when I was in Edinburgh. H was just coming into Tescos as I was leaving. I let him know I recognised him, without actually saying anything, as you do. I was surprised how short he is - maybe 5 10 - considering how much larger than life he looks on stage...

There's loads of brilliant front men from now & from back in the day. In addition to the ones mentioned...
Jack White (White Stripes/Raconteurs/Dead Weather) (NAP) Adam Ant Watty (Exploited) Animal (Anti-Nowhere League) Brett Anderson (Suede) Damon Albarn (Blur) Liam Gallacher, Ian Brown, Mike Skinner etc etc etc
None of the above are brilliant singers (although Anderson was beter live than I'd expected) but all had phenomenal stage presence for one reason or another.

Michael Stipe was amazing when REM played Ipswich a couple of years ago. Never thought he would be 'all that', but he was a quality frontman. When they did a track without him, they became a pub band.

Robert Plant Greatest frontman for greatest band the World has ever, or will ever, seen.
Sam Baker----singer songwriter from Texas. Of all the current crop, if you can, go see this man when he is next over here. A magnetic stage presence. Uncanny.

Saw Morrissey a month back. Excellent gig, he's a genuine great, whatever people think of him. Not sure about him being a great frontman as such, more just an all round 'character'.
Lemmy - he's not a bad frontman for his age either.

I'll say Rod Stewart, and before anyone says anything I'm not thinking of the crooning slush he went on to perform.
Get on youtube and type in The Faces BBC, you'll see footage from 1971. Pure gold.

Managed to see Audioslave live a couple of years ago. Chris Cornell was epic.
Glen Hansard in his Frames days was outstanding before he became a bit of a tart.
Billie Joe Armstrong, Bono and Dave Grohl would be the others that stand out from what I've seen live.
Brandon Flowers was carp.
Never saw Queen but Mercury would have to go down as one of the best frontmen, if not the best.

Here are the clues, he looked like a demented old fagan type tramp on stage with long matted hair playing flute stood on one leg, an amazing musician who had the audiance in the palm of his hand and was " Thick as a Brick ".....

Mark E Smith in control in 1983. You don't see things like that on mainstream tv now.
Still doing it now, saw them a few years ago, felt like they had levitated the building.
