One of the very best of those 'BBC Ghost Stories for Christmas' that used to be such a pleasure around 389 years ago when I was a lad.

From the pen of M R James, which is usually recommendation enough, but this also features Michael Hordern (a joy), some atmospheric location filming, and it's just possible you may never look at one of your domestic black rubbish bags the same way ever again.

Sky+'ified!!

I LOVE these ghost stories. It's something of a tradition in my family that we watch all these great MR James stories this time of year.

I love also a warning to the curious and that horrible one with the children who had their hearts scratched out!

Love'em.

On a related note, Henry James's classic - Turn of the Screw is the big christmas BBC4 ghost story this year. Massively looking forward to it.

Saw the woman in black the other day again too. Very good.

There's nothing like a good ghost story.

Great aren't they !

'Whistle and I'll Come to You' is a very nasty little tale.

people always rave about the signalman (Dickens) but i've never thought it was all that good.

I liked that to be fair.

The Signalman was one of the first popular ghost stories. Kind of historically meaningful.

M R James was the master of understated horror. "A face made of crumpled linen..."

If you haven't read him, let me recommend William Hope Hodgson. Carnacki the Ghost Finder and - his masterpiece - The House On The Borderland. The Ghost Pirates and The Boats of the Glen Carrig fine. Don't read The Night Land - sadly just a stylistic nightmare.

Whistle etc... was first shown 41 years ago. So my grandad tells me.

Whistle and I'll Come to You
Jonathan Miller's adaptation of the short story by horror writer MR James. A professor who is skeptical about the paranormal finds an old whistle while holidaying on the Cornish coast, and is then plagued by a series of weird visions. Michael Horden stars
